Design Indaba Conference & Festival

Browse through cutting-edge examples of design at Mzansi’s foremost creative festival

Last Updated: 14 February 2017

Design Indaba, the globally acclaimed creative fandango that’s put Cape Town on the world map as an international hotbed of innovation, dishes up yet another year of multifaceted events in 2017. Taking place at the Artscape Theatre again this year, and a few subsidiary venues, from Saturday, 25 February, to Saturday, 4 March 2017, the much-anticipated multidisciplinary experience – it includes a conference, simulcast, film festival and Emerging Creatives exhibition – looks to, beyond all else, get the creative juices flowing in the Mother City. The programme is also jammed with wonderful things to experience at the festival!

Launched in 1995, Design Indaba was inspired by a need to overcome societal issues and was driven forward by the goal of promoting design as a basic form of communication, as a business requirement and as a formidable tool in industry and commerce.

There will not be an expo this year either but designers interested in showcasing their work through Design Indaba can sign up to their Designer Directory or enter for the next Emerging Creatives programme.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT THE 2017 DESIGN INDABA CONFERENCE & FESTIVAL IN CAPE TOWN

2017 LI EDELKOORT DESIGN & LIFESTYLE TREND FORECAST SEMINAR: Happening on Saturday, 4 March 2017, from 10am to 3pm – world-renowned forecaster of future fashion and design trends Li Edelkoort will be back at Design Indaba Festival 2017 in Cape Town to present her annual trend seminar. We will be witnessing her presenting a full-day seminar on fashion, textiles, bio-engineering, home and interior, and design empathy. This seminar will be assured to keep you in the loop of what’s hot and what’s not. The programme will also include a free morning session aimed at design students, which will introduce a new Master of Fine Arts in Textiles launching in 2018.

2017 DESIGN INDABA FILMFEST: Experience the power of creativity through the medium of film at the Design Indaba’s Film Festival held at the Artscape Theatre. This will be happening from Wednesday, 1 March 2017, to Friday, 3 March 2017. The Film Festival will be a showcase of the world’s best indie and creative films. Films selected for this once-off programme are all proudly African, which  will be shown on African soil for the very first time. There will also be a showcase of a combination of feature films and short films over the three nights at the Artscape.

2017 DESIGN INDABA CONFERENCE AND SIMULCAST: The Design Indaba’s annual Conference of Creativity will be taking place from Wednesday, 1 March 2017, to Friday, 3 March 2017, at the Artscape Theatre, from which it will be broadcast to multiple African cities via simulcast. This annual three-day showcase of the world’s most creative minds, providing endless inspiration, new perspectives and universal solutions, will be sure to leave you blown away. The Conference has been the highlight of South Africa’s creative calendar since 1995, and has not only contributed vastly to uplifting the South African design sector, but has also been named the best design conference in the world. The Design Indaba Conference audience can look forward to a stellar selection of speakers with compelling multimedia presentations that combine performance, storytelling, career-changing insights and the most cutting-edge creative work on the global circuit. Under the art direction of fashion designer Selly Raby Kane, the conference is being elevated to the next creative level for 2017. Expect activations, live performances, music, exhibitions, a feast of food and drink, and even more immersive experiences than ever before at Design Indaba 2017. Prepare to be gobsmacked by all the exciting discoveries at the 2017 version of the Design Indaba Conference and Simulcast.

2017 DESIGN INDABA MOST BEAUTIFUL OBJECT IN SOUTH AFRICA (MBOISA): Every year, the Design Indaba tackles our conception of beauty with the much anticipated MBOISA competition. The Most Beautiful Object in South Africa is an annual competition that is aimed at sparking discussions around beauty and the public’s perception of it. Ten celebrity influencers will nominate what they think is the Most Beautiful Object in South Africa, and the public then votes for their favourite object. 2017 will see the Most Beautiful Object in South Africa competition culminate in an exhibition held in Cape Town during Design Indaba Festival in March.

2017 EMERGING CREATIVES: Providing a platform for South Africa’s hottest emerging creative talent, this mentorship programme seeks to give upcoming artists the support and exposure that they need to kick-start their careers. Specifically targeted at young creatives with little industry exposure, the Design Indaba will facilitate a high profile exhibition as part of its festival. Architects, fashion designers, furniture designers, jewellers and illustrators are all invited to put forward their works for consideration, and the judging is based on originality and quality. Applicants for the Emerging Creatives section of the festival will be hosted in Cape Town from Wednesday, 1 March, to Saturday 4 March 2017 in order for them  to attend the Design Indaba Festival. They will then be invited to exhibit their work at the Artscape Theatre Centre alongside the Conference, FilmFest and Nightscape. They will also attend workshops from industry professionals, attend Design Indaba Simulcast in Cape Town and network with a host of industry legends, national and international media – what a time to be creative, right?

2017 DESIGN INDABAR: Now what’s a party without a little watering hole? Look forward to the Design “In-da-Bar”. This will be a pop-up bar at the Design Indaba Festival that will keep conference delegates and festivalrevellers going well into the evenings of creative celebration. There’s more to thisbar though, the 2017 festival will bring the weird and wonderful of installation and performance into an outdoor experience brought together by creative direction from fashion designer Selly Raby Kane. And we all know that no bar would be complete without music, and music is as much a part of creative innovation as any other aspect of design. There will be live music – both in the evenings and during lunch – thus forms a cornerstone of this festival arena. Design IndaBar is also the perfect networking and relaxation opportunity for festival-goers. Set on the lively piazza of the Artscape Theatre, IndaBar features live performances, food trucks and exciting entertainment against the exquisite backdrop of Cape Town’s late summer skyline. Expect the DesignIndabars to pop up from Wednesday, 1 March, to Friday, 3 March 2017. There will also be separate headlining music events the evening(s) during the course of the event.

2017 DESIGN INDABA NIGHTSCAPE: Head on over to a surreal wonderland of music, art, food and exhibitions at the Design Indaba’s first ever Nightscape. The occasion will allow you to feast on an array of creativity and also a chance to immerse yourself in a dreamscape of ideas and innovations. This affair will be taking place for three days from Wednesday, 1 March, to Friday, 3 March 2017. This will see the Artscape open up to the public from 5:30pm until late and what’s more? A three-night pass will only cost you R200p/p.
