Cape Town accommodation that combines Victorian charm and modern convenience
Sandwiched between the bend of Green Point and the slope of Signal Hill, Antrim Villa offers a stylish, comfortable place to a stay both close to the city centre and to a series of beautiful beaches; it’s only minutes away from the V & A Waterfront, Camps Bay, Table Mountain, the Cape Town Stadium and many other tourist attractions.
Aside from the perks that come with the guesthouse’s ideal location – did we mention that it’s also a mere five minute walk from the Sea Point promenade, a green space perfect for early morning and dusky sunset strolls – it is also tastefully decorated. Owner Jonas Sandström has used his interior design experience to transform the Victorian house, which dates back to the 1800s, into a light, natural space reflective of the drama of the surrounding landscape. He takes his inspiration from the grasses and fynbos that grow on Signal Hill, the sandy shoreline just ten minutes walk away and the curves and lines of the hills and outcrops that wind their way through Cape Town. The original high ceilings and wooden floors have a neutral palette and natural textures, and the outside walls are lined with tall bamboo which gives the guesthouse a feeling of seclusion and privacy not often found in the city.
Despite being very close to the hustle and bustle of the Main Road, it’s quiet and calm in Antrim Villa. The personal, home-away-from-home feeling is reinforced by the fact that there are only eight rooms. Seven of these are double and one is single.
Each room has an en-suite bathroom, tastefully decorated with Scandinavian simplicity in mind and added African touches. All bedrooms are spacious with extra length European beds that can be semi-detached on request. All rooms have high ceilings, a relaxing atmosphere and 100% cotton sheets.
The villa provides safe off-street parking, 24 hour service and security; and for those less concerned with safety and more concerned with luxury, the sun drenched, yet secluded tropical bamboo garden and large swimming pool are available for guests to relax in.
Guests can choose between standard and luxury rooms. Each room contains a heater, fan, hairdryer, European plug, gowns and a small electronic safe. The luxury rooms offer special features such as flat screen TVs, iPod docking stations and mini fridges. Three of the rooms open out onto the lower level garden and give the guests more privacy – perfect for a family or group of friends, while the other bedrooms are inside the house.
Antrim Villa also offers free internet access at the in-house computer desk, or for a small fee you can have access to their wireless network using your own laptop. There is also a television and a small library in the communal lounge which guests are welcome to use.
Their large, healthy Scandinavian breakfast buffet is prepared fresh, including freshly baked breads, and is served from 7:30am to 9:30am on the terrace or in the lounge. Coffee, tea, hot chocolate and fruit are complimentary and can be enjoyed at all times. A deliciously healthy non-alcoholic welcome drink and a heated/cooled cloth is served to guests on arrival.
Chauffeured airport transfers can be arranged in a Chrysler Voyager luxury vehicle. Taxis, car rentals, safaris, tours and dinner reservations can be arranged, and the staff is always up-to-date with what’s happening in and around Cape Town, and are available to assist you with your leisure arrangements. Joy Daniels, the guesthouse manager, has recently become a certified tour guide and will happily provide some insightful tips on exciting things to see and do in Cape Town.
Antrim Villa has been awarded with a Fair Trade in Tourism certificate for their conscious effort to support entrepreneurs and their mantra “think global, buy local”. They also run the guesthouse in an eco-friendly way, and have incorporated recycling and energy saving into everything they do.
So if you’re looking for somewhere to stay that’s close to everything, but where you can still relax and enjoy your trip then Antrim Villa is the perfect choice. The guesthouse is a comfortable space that offers tranquillity, great service and inspiring design.
Tip: Not only is this guesthouse close to the city centre but it’s just a ten minute walk to the Cape Town Stadium, so if you’re in town for a concert or match this is a good choice. The Green Point Park right next to the stadium is a fantastic place to enjoy a picnic.
