La Motte Wine Estate in Franschhoek

A Cape Winelands experience to rival all others

They say that adventure is the best way to learn. If you want to discover the best our beautiful region has to offer when it comes to good food and great wine, you needn’t go far. La Motte Wine Estate in Franschhoek will give you all this and so much more.

Beautiful, conscientious, cultured and full of integrity, this historic winery is a celebration of the finest things in life.

Dating back as far as 1695, the female-owned wine estate was passed down to Hanneli Rupert-Koegelenberg by her father Anton Rupert. The numerous statues found around the estate, like heroines of hospitality, echo the compassionate fearlessness Hanneli wants to capture in the atmosphere of the estate and in the wine produced. “It’s important that guests feel at home here. Whether they’re going for wine tasting, having high tea in Pierneef á La Motte or walking through the museum; we want everyone to feel at home,” Senior Public Relations Officer, Marli Roux begins, “There is nothing that is placed on your plate or poured into your glass that the entire team isn’t 100% proud of,” she shares.

This commitment to excellence has earned La Motte the local and international acclaim.

You only need to visit the wine estate to understand why. Picture a healthy arrangement of vines budding with different grapes, lush lawns meticulously manicured and a panoramic view of the Groot Drakenstein mountain range. This idyllic wine estate, found an hour out of Cape Town, will have you feeling serene, relaxed and eventually quite reluctant to leave – and there’s so much to do!

From hiking, dining, wine tasting and wine pairing to museum tours and historic walks; La Motte has it all. Enjoy a leisurely stroll through and up the mountainous property where you can see some of the indigenous plant- and wildlife the winery is making a concerted effort to protect. Tuck into a tantalising meal or treat yourself to afternoon tea at the on-site restaurant; Pierneef á La Motte. Head to the intimate tasting room, that leads off from the wine cellar, to sip and swirl some of the best vinos the estate has to offer. Or be taken through the history and heritage of the wine estate, and the area at large, during the La Motte Museum Tour and Historic Walk. Spoilt for choice, you’d have to spend an entire day in Franschhoek for the full La Motte experience.

Dining at Pierneef à La Motte Restaurant

La Motte’s strong emphasis on the marriage of food and wine is best demonstrated in the cuisine its magnificent on-site restaurant serves.

Pierneef continues to pave the wave for fine-dining cuisine. Chef Michelle Theron stays on top of international food trends and heads a kitchen which serves food that is as creative as it is delicious. Enjoy a meal that is a celebration of all the tastes of the region.  Pierneef à La Motte draws on research that reached back into three centuries of history to resurrect the area’s culinary past. What’s more - each dish has been conceptualised to pair perfectly with La Motte’s wine and the staff are happy to suggest pairings.

The Winelands Tea, a sweet and savoury spread that pays homage to a culture of hospitality, pairs painstakingly crafted confectionary with either red, green, black and fruit-infused teas, the La Motte Straw Wine or the La Motte Méthode Cap Classique.

Take in the view

La Motte, with its 170 hectares and 30-hectare nature reserve, also offers visitors an opportunity to take a 5km mountainside hike to learn more about sustainability, a concept the wine farm holds dear. Devoted to conservation, the wine estate has been appointed as one of only 27 ‘Champion’ farms in the nation by the esteemed Biodiversity & Wine Initiative (BWI). The body welcomed the historic Franschhoek property to its ranks in 2007.

As it turns out, the whole estate adheres to biological farming practices, and as a result, the bird life on La Motte is thriving. Expect to see rare flower species and indigenous plants blossoming, and the garden is lush with micro-herbs and farm-fresh fruits and vegetables.

The natural beauty, much like the delectable wines, is intoxicating. Thanks to the efforts of the La Motte team, visitors can now take their time and enjoy nearly everything the Cape Winelands has to offer with a single stop at this storied estate.

Tip: Everything about this award-winning wine estate is noteworthy; you really can’t go wrong with what you decide to do, eat or drink. The Vinoteque Tasting does deserve special mention though. La Motte’s history is encapsulated in a bottle and guests get a chance a take a trip through time, through wine. For R200/p guests can sample the best performing vintages the wine estate has produced over the years.
