Fields of wildflowers up the West Coast, red stone hills in the Karoo and breaching whales along the shores of Hermanus: the Western Cape is tough to beat when it comes to its bevvy of beautiful getaway spots. Why not take the chance to get away for a bit and enjoy everything the province has to offer? Here are 5 day trip ideas to get you started.
Milk on the Beach in Onrus, the hidden little peaceful town neighbouring the bustling nearby Hermanus, is all about beach days and lazy lunches. Right on Onrus Lagoon, it has views of the beach – to keep an eye on your kids playing in the sand – and the ocean beyond. There’s fresh fish, sushi, poké bowls, boozy slushies, and local beer and wine. Plus, it has a Waffle Shack downstairs where you can build your own waffles.
Date: Open daily, 8am to 8pm
Cost: From R70 for a small plate

Beach days are incomplete without a stop at Dutchies. Friends sip cocktails in the courtyard as the sun sets, families gather over fresh hake and chips, and couples chat over glasses of wine on date night. There’s Dutch dishes like bitterballen and stroopwaffels. Plus, jazz evenings happen every last Friday of the month at Dutchies Restaurant in Hermanus.
Date: Daily, from 9am to 9pm
Cost: From R65 for starters
