The Milkwood Tree in Mossel Bay is over 500 years old and is known as the Post Office Tree.


The famous Milkwood Tree in Mossel Bay is over 500 years old, and is known as the Post Office Tree.

In 1500 a sailor left a letter in a shoe, tucked in the tree. In 1501 this letter was found by Joao da Nova, who was en route to India. In this way the first post office in South Africa was founded.
