2015

Although the Rugby World Cup is taking place in England this year from Friday, 18 September to Saturday, 31 October 2015, that shouldn’t stop you from enjoying the game. Keep up-to-date with all the fixtures and plan your life so that you can kick back and relax when the matches are screened.

This will be the eighth Rugby World Cup, spanning a total of 28 years. The first ever Rugby World Cup was hosted by Australia and New Zealand in 1987 with 16 nations competing for the Webb Ellis Cup. That tournament was won by New Zealand. Since then, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand have all lifted the Webb Ellis Cup twice, while England has won the tournament once. South Africa last brought home the trophy in 2007 after they defeated reigning champions England in a try-less final.

Therefore, South Africa, New Zealand and Australia have the chance this year of being the first team in history to win the Rugby World Cup three times. In 2015, a total of 20 nations will compete – 12 of which qualified automatically from the 2011 Rugby World Cup, and the other eight having qualified through regional competitions.

The 2011 Rugby World Cup was won by the host-nation, New Zealand, who will no doubt play hard to keep the trophy this year.

The only other African country to qualify for this year’s tournament is our northern neighbour, Namibia. Japan is the only Asian country to qualify, and will be the hosts of the 2019 Rugby World Cup. Argentina, Canada, the USA and Uruguay will represent the Americas, whereas Australia, Fiji, New Zealand, Samoa and Tonga will represent the Australasian islands. The most entrants from a single continent, however, are from Europe - England, France, Georgia, Ireland, Italy, Romania, Scotland and Wales.
