AfrikaBurn Comes To Observatory In Streetopia

It’s a fantasy of fun (and mindfulness), from an all-female stage to crazy cars

Mutant cars, street performers and street art – you’ll be forgiven for thinking you’ve found a worm hole into the uniquely strange world of Afrikaburn (or the set of Mad Max). Welcome to Streetopia, where you can get a taste of the famous Karoo festival, without the camping gear, travelling time or trading culture. 

This one-day carnival takes place on Saturday, 30 November, on Lower Main Road in Observatory and promises to give you a taste of Tankwa Town you’ve been craving.


IT’S GEARED FOR FANTASY AND ENTERTAINMENT
Now in its fifth edition, regular patrons will be familiar with the event: an Afrikaburn-inspired artistic free-for-all with mutant cars and street performers being just the tip of the iceberg. You’ll find everything from jugglers to clowns, impromptu guitar jams, comedy troupes and stalls selling everything from arts and crafts to vintage clothing.

The classic auto area (hosted by Obs resident Hazel Walton's Vintage Obs Day) is back and will showcase amazing classic vehicles in the area from St Michael's Road to Collingwood Road. There will also be new additions to the event, such as an all-woman music stage with the moniker 'Don't Call Me Moses', hosted by activist Lu Cherry. The International Society for Krishna Consciousness will distribute vegetarian food and host discussions on mindfulness and environmental issues.

The main Village Green stage will be managed by the Barleycorn Music Club for the first time, and it’s hosting an impressive lineup of artists, including Stanley Sibande, Mary Anne Constable, Devin Harmer and The Voodoo Cats.

The stage is small and runs from 10am to 6pm. Anyone can participate and even the organisers don't know the full range of performances until the day. So be prepared for anything to happen.

BE A PART OF THE CARNIVAL VIBE
For the market, first preference will be given to residents of Observatory, Mowbray, Salt River and Rosebank. However, if you’re an artist or performer, you’re welcome to bring your contribution to the table.

Alternatively, if you don’t want to showcase, you can always help out with logistics. You can do anything from a general volunteering to helping set up and, of course, what goes up must come down… Artistic minds can help with placement of artistic pieces and you can also help preserve the peace at the event as a community ranger.
