Cape Umoya United Brings A Breath of Fresh Air to Cape Soccer Scene
Find out how the Mother City's new soccer club is stirring up the football scene
Cape Umoya United, formerly known as Platinum Stars, are the Mother City’s new footballing kids on the block after club CEO and head coach, Roger de Sa, announced in June 2018 that he would relocate from Phokeng in the Northwest.
Cape Umoya, which means Cape Spirit in isiXhosa, dropped out of the PSL last season in a similar fashion to Ajax Cape Town and in an effort to make a quick return to the elite league, have almost completely rebuilt their squad.
Intriguingly, the club has strong “links” to the Urban Warriors with de Sa, his assistant, Dominic Isaacs and goalkeeper coach, Andre Petim all having plied their tried at Ikamva, the headquarters of Ajax, while a quartet of ex-players are expected to play major roles on the field.
These are: former Ajax development goalkeeper, Tawfeeq Salie, defenders Roscoe Pietersen and Shane Saralina, and veteran striker Nathan Paulse, 36, who came out of retirement.
Pietersen and the well-travelled defensive midfielder, Manti Mekoa, have been named as co-captains.
Umoya will be playing in white at the Cape Town Stadium, while their away colours are black (blue is alternative).
De Sa’s coaching record includes relegating Wits University and Platinum Stars, while he endured a winless league stint at Ajax during the beginning of the 2016-17 season, before losing 5 out of 7 games at Maritzburg United, which also cost him his job.
