World-renowned dubstep master set to take South Africa by storm in 2013

Skrillex, the LA-born high priest of dubstep and arguably the world’s sickest beat-dropper, will be performing at the Cape Town Ostrich Farm on the West Coast (a mere 20-minute drive outside the Mother City) on Friday, 1 March 2013 (as well as in Johannesburg on 2 March and in Durban on 3 March).

Powered by 5FM and brought to you by Samsung Galaxy and Electric, the masters behind the Nicky Romero and Steve Aoki and Swedish House Mafia tours, the Skrillex show will beyond a doubt be one of the most massive electronic dance music (EDM) acts to hit Mzansi shores in the past 12 months. 

Sonny Moore (Skrillex’s real name) currently stands at the vanguard of a rapidly evolving new music industry. In 2011 he was nominated for five and took home three Grammy awards – “Best Dance Recording”, “Best Dance/Electronica Album” and “Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical” – and thus successfully left behind a past that included being the lead singer of a screamo band and mixing most of his music in an illegal warehouse bedroom. 

Needless to say, these days, the man whose sound has been described as everything from “a modem with indigestion” to “a mix of dubstep, electro and glitch all thrown together” is worth a whopping $15 million, but he doesn’t let the money mar his mission. 

He’s a reported workaholic – averaging nearly a gig a night – and though he painstakingly produces and engineers signature tracks with heavy, plunging bass lines and wild, stuttering beats, he releases much of his music for free, spiting the record companies and asserting his place as a deity among the masses. 

He uploaded his first solo EP, “My Name is Skrillex”, for nada on his official MySpace page, and has since released “Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites” (2010) and “More Monsters and Sprites” (2011) to less than brilliant record sales. 

It goes without saying, then, that it’s the supersonic, thumpalicious live performances that pay the bills...and for good reason. He’s effectively been the first DJ to mainstream ‘the drop’, and bring a sub-genre to the forefront of pop culture consciousness and to a top 50 spot on the Billboard charts. 

Not an easy task, especially for someone who’s confessed to taking early inspiration from Marilyn Manson, Nine Inch Nails, Aphex Twin and The Prodigy. 

More recently, this master of mayhem released a shockingly low-key EP titled “Leaving”, an album that includes the songs ‘Leaving’, ‘Scary Bolly Dub’ and ‘The Reason’. The title track is quite a departure from his usual sound, yet this down-tempo tune – it was recorded in a Mexico City hotel room – is widely popular with his fans.

All in all, from Satan worshippers to rave babies to those who simply need to wile out for an evening, with Skrillex at the helm, Capetonians are guaranteed a raucous night of wild revelry. 

Supporting act for the Skrillex Concert in Cape Town

Established beat-maker and Mzansi’s heavy electro muso Haezer is billed to open for  the dubstep demigod. Hot off the heels of a raucous set at the Cape Town Electronic Music Festival, this world-renowned techno-punk beats creator from the Mother City will, no doubt, get the crowds rocking with his unique and sought-after sound.

Early-bird tickets for the Mother City opskop will be available via Computicket.com from Monday, 28 January to Monday, 4 February (or when they sell out) for a steal: R300p/p.
