A peaceful spot in Newlands with a deli and greenhouse
Last updated: Friday, 06 May 2022
The Gardener’s Cottage Restaurant & Coffee Shop in Newlands fits many bills: It’s ideal for a family get together, and just as good for a meeting with a colleague; you can find a quiet corner to work, or just to enjoy a coffee-and-cake break. Plus, it’s pet-friendly too. Enjoy a pastry breakfast or opt for a late lunch with fairy lights.

There are plenty of tables under the trees, perfect for al fresco dining. It's such a peaceful place, with plenty of space and greenery that gives a sense of calm. The restaurant is pet- and kid-friendly, and there’s a greenhouse on site, where you can also buy plants. For those who prefer to dine inside, the restaurant’s interior is welcoming, with simple, minimalist decor.

Breakfast, casual lunch or late lunch with friends or family, The Gardener’s Cottage has an uncomplicated menu of favourites, such as an Indian curry and butternut panzerotti, or yummy burgers (vegetarian, too). Patrons love the chicken livers, too.

The deli is a destination in and of itself, with eye-catching displays of freshly baked cakes and other desserts. If you have a sweet tooth, the chocolate tart, lemon curd, and pecan tart are all good options. Everything in the kitchen is made with love, and you can take home their handmade chocolate, brussel squares, red-onion-and cabbage pickle and many other options.

You'll find The Gardener's Cottage at the Montebello Design Centre, which is housed in historic brewery buildings dating back to the 1800s. You can meet on the restaurant's stoep or in its garden for an afternoon drink – it has options from wine and whisky to teas and milkshakes. Sip on a glass of L’ormarins Brut Classique wine, kick back with a Devils Peak Lager or opt for a lemonade if you are not into alcohol.
