Cape Town's most popular road running event is once again upon us... get ready Cape Town

In years past, this typically Capetonian event was held in early September but this year it takes place on Sunday, October 12.

Participants can choose from a 21km half marathon, a 10km run/walk and a 5km run/walk, which was introduced last year to attract families, younger participants and more walkers.

“This is the third year we are a part of this Cape Town tradition and plan to make it bigger and better than ever before.”

“Last year the event attracted a field of 8 000 participants, despite the miserable weather, so we are expecting to host close to 10 000 on race day,” said OUTsurance head of marketing, Peter Cronje.

Both the 10 km and half marathon routes take runners through the V&A Waterfront, with the half marathon taking them through the city centre, Government Avenue, the Atlantic Seaboard along Somerset Road and the Mouille Point Promenade.

The half marathon route will take participants past the 94.5 Kfm studios in Somerset Road, where the radio station’s staff will be hosting a refreshment station that will provide water, energy drinks and entertainment to help the runners on their way.

And the 21 km starts at 07h00, the 10 km at 07h30 and the 5 km at 07h45. Participants have three hours to complete the 21 km, two and a half hours to run or walk the 10 km and two hours and 15 minutes to finish the 5 km.

The Children’s Hospital Trust, the fundraising arm of the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital is the event’s official charity this year.

Funds raised by the Gun Run will go directly to the hospital for the purchasing of life-saving theatre equipment for the new Operating Theatre Complex currently under construction.
