Celebrate Surfing, Yoga and Christmas (WTF?) This Weekend
Plus taste wines you’ve never tasted before at Just Like Papa’s
We’re in a celebratory mood this weekend. Surfers are breaking records in muizenberg while the town of Tulbagh is celebrating Christmas a little early this year. It’s International Day of Yoga on Friday, but this being Cape Town, we’re so cool we’re celebrating it the next day.
The only magic college in the world is situated in Cape Town, and the students are doing a school holiday show all weekend long, and the celebrations aren’t over as the Shred brings an international skating celebration to SA for the first time.
All this and more plus plans for next weekend right here.
#Pickoftheweek: Just When You Think You’ve Had It All
What happens when 30 artisanal winemakers bring 100 of their most uniquely flavoured wines to one place? You’ll taste something you’ve never tasted before, that’s what. Experience this at Just Like Papa’s for the Publik Wine Fair.
2. Celebrating The Art Of Striking A Pose
Gather around for a festival of lotus positions and downward dogs as we celebrate the art of Yoga in Cape Town. It may be happening the day after the official date, but none of that matter when celebrating the International Day Of Yoga in Gardens.
3. It’s A Kind Of Magic
Wednesday - Saturday
Take the kids to a show that proves magic exists, and that it’s taught right here in Cape Town. The world’s only magic college, situated in Claremont, is hosting its annual winter school holidays show called the Traditional Children’s Magic Festival.
4. Keep FIdo Safe
If you always worry about your fur baby getting lost, leave those concerns at the door. Get your pets microchipped and have peace of mind that no matter where they are, they can always get back to you. Where is this you ask? Find out more about the Pet Microchipping Day.
5. Paddle Out and Break A Record
It’s been 100 years since the first person caught a wave on an African beach. So this weekend sufers are paddling out into the ocean en masse, to break a longstanding record and celebrate International Surf Day with a 100 Year Paddle Out in Muizenberg.
6. They Don’t Know It’s (not) Christmas
Saturday - Sunday
Ever listened to Bing Crosby crooning about a white Christmas and wonder, “Wtf is he on about”. Well the people of Tulbagh got tired of the FOMO, so they pull together every year to celebrate the silly season earlier than usual by creating their own Christmas In Winter.
7. Bump, Grind and Rail Day
Skateboarding hasn’t been around as long as surfing, but it’s still one of the most adored activities among Cape Town youths. Our friends at The Shred skatepark know this, and are introducing an international celebration of all things Skateboarding called Go Skateboarding Day.
8. Find SA’s Next Hollywood Star
This school holidays aspiring child actors and performers have a chance to attend a workshop where they’ll learn the ins and outs of working the advertising model industry. They’ll also get tips about etiquette and handling auditions at the Kids On Camera Workshop.
Crump, Pop and Lock
There may not be cowboys, but Cape Town does have insanely talented dance crews. They’re coming to together at the Artscape to throw an extravaganza of dance styles and synchronized moves at Cape Town’s Most Wanted.
Bring, Braai and Jazzy Tunes
Join the legendary Sammy Webber and his ensemble band, Jazz On The Yard, for a relaxed Sunday braai while they entertain you with their slick, soulful sounds at Jazz On The Kraal.
Look At Me I’m Sweet 16
Fokofpolisiekar turn 16 this year, and are coming home to Bellville with new material and a few classics. Join them at The Barnyard for the Fokof 16 Birthday Bash.
