It’s Human Rights Day weekend. There’s a musical show for couples, a magic festival for families, and a holiday workshop for kids. There’s also a literary festival for book lovers and a once-in-a-lifetime art exhibition at Iziko South African National Gallery. Here are 10+ more things you can do this week(end).

SING AND DANCE TO WORLD-CLASS MUSICALS

Dust off your air guitars, polish your dancing shoes, and prepare to be transported to the silver screen. Barnyard Theatre is showcasing The Hollywood Walk of Fame. Think Grease and its electrifying disco, Footloose and its infectious dances, and A Star is Born’s heart-wrenching ballads.

TAKE THE KIDS TO A MAGIC FESTIVAL

The College of Magic is back for 3 days of splashy holiday entertainment. Each ticket includes access to a theatrical magic show, self-guided tour of their magic mansion, learning a magical stunt, visiting the carnival of wonders and games. Plus, there are puppeteers, jugglers, clowns, and more. The 75-minute programmes run daily.

GO TO A LITERARY FESTIVAL

Books on the Bay is a literary festival hosted in Simon’s Town. Join for a range of talks and events with local authors (over 40 South African and international writers), including Ivan Vladislavić, C.A. Davids, Darrel Bristow-Bovey, and Margie Orford. The festival’s 28 events range from readings, panel discussions, book launches, a poetry soirée, and for the first time, two stage performances.

SEE 100+ ARTWORKS FROM ESTHER MAHLANGU

Globally acclaimed artist Esther Mahlangu is showcasing over 100 artworks, including the iconic BMW 525i Art Car, at Iziko South African National Gallery. The once-in-a-lifetime exhibition, “Then I Knew I Was Good at Painting”: Esther Mahlangu, A Retrospective, is open to the public until August. Find out more about Esther Mahlangu’s art and career.

TAKE THE KIDS TO A HOLIDAY WORKSHOP

TRY VEGAN DISHES AND KOMBUCHA COCKTAILS

At Pear Tree there are plenty of unqiue dishes that you won't find anywhere else (many of which are vegan). Situated on the Hermanus waterfront, this healthy eatery looks out onto the vibrant blue sea. Sip a kombucha cocktail under the trees, or try a tofu tostada sprinkled with nori dust and a charcoal aquafaba dessert.

Traditional cheese-and-wine pairings are way too passé for Black Elephant Vintners – it offers something far more rebellious: Join for a sparkling-wine or wine tasting, pop on some headphones and prepare to be blown into a land of heightened senses at this punk-rock cellar
