Things do do for Mandela Day 2020 in Cape Town

Pitch in this Mandela Day and help uplift your community in the spirit of Tata Madiba

Last Update: 15 July 2020

Doing good doesn’t have to be dull. Spend your 67 minutes building a kennel for a dog in Khayelitsha, running a 67km marathon (in your own time) or helping to build a virtual Mandela Day mosaic with cans of food for Mandela Day on 18 July.

IT’S MANDELA MONTH AT THE WOODSTOCK BREWERY
1-31 July
The Woodstock Brewery has repurposed their beer vats for a greater cause. For the entire month of July, The brewery invites you to help them make vats of soup to feed over 10,000 people a day. All the help is warmly welcomed, including peeling and cutting the vegetables or helping with deliveries in celebration of Mandela month at the Woodstock Brewery.

WATCH A SPECIAL LIVE STREAM SHOW FROM ROBBEN ISLAND
DJ Shimza will make history this Mandela Day as the first artist to perform a livestream show from Robben Island. With the help from his own foundation SHIMUZIC and the Siya Kolisi Foundation, DJ Shimza plans to perform a special two-hour set to raise funds for those negatively affected by Covid-19. Prepare for a unique performance set to a deep and moving performance with an iconic Cape Town backdrop. You can watch DJ Shimza live via MTV Base South Africa and you can help him reach his target of R200,000 by donating online via howler.co.za.
When: 18 July, 4pm-6pm

BUILD A KENNEL FOR KHAYELITSHA PETS WITHOUT LEAVING HOME
Mdzananda Animal Clinic is hosting its annual Mandela Day Kennel Building. This year, however, will be a bit different. Instead of joining the Mdzananda staff in Khayelitsha, you'll be able to build the kennel from home. All you'll need is some wood, a hammer, measuring tape, and a pencil. If you'd like to add some colourful flair to your kennel, you can add paint and paintbrushes to your list as well. To take part and receive your kennel instruction manual, you can email marcelle@mdzananda.co.za.
When: 18 July, 7am-11pm
Price: Free

It's as simple as buttering, spreading and packing to help feed those in need. For Mandela Day join the BNI Dream team to help them reach their goal of making 5000 sandwiches for Ladles of Love. Participants are encouraged to make the sandwiches at home and drop them off, but if you'd like to join the team in Milnerton, you can. They have enforced rigorous hygiene protocols for the safety of those involved.

HELP BUILD A VIRTUAL TINNED FOOD MOSAIC
Last year the Global Teachers Institute (GTI) managed to build an incredible mosaic commemorating Madiba's life with over 30,000 donated cans of food. This year, they intend to top it virtually. Between 1 July and 18 July, you can purchase a can of food online to place somewhere on the virtual Nelson Mandela mosaic. Plus, anyone who donates will be able to enjoy a live concert on 18 July, where the completed Madiba mosaic will be revealed. The headlining act is SAMA 2019 nominee Jarrad Ricketts. To purchase and place your can of food you can visit The GTI Summit website.
When: 1 July to 18 July
Price: Various according to cans.

ASSEMBLE A BOX OF GOODIES FOR CHILDREN IN NEED
Christel House in Ottery invites you to use your 67 minutes to assemble an essential Covid-19 goodies bag for a student in need. The items which you can fill each bag with can include food parcels, cloth masks and hand sanitizer. Christel House encourages participants to value their food parcels at R150 so all kids receive the same amount. You can also fill it up with non-perishable items such as maize meal, rice, cooking oil or canned goods. When you're happy with your parcel you can drop it off at Christel House school on 17 July.
