Ideas to make Mother’s Day special
Great ways to make her day special
Sunday, 10 May will be South Africa's first Mother's Day in lockdown, and for a lot of us, this will be the first Mother's Day we won't be able to spend with mom. This year families need to get creative: visiting your mother or taking her out to brunch at her favourite restaurant is off the table. But there are still plenty of ways to show our appreciation without breaking the rules - and without much planning in advance.
From a virtual surprise Sunday lunch and DIY spa days to home-cooked meals and a virtual quiz night all about mom, there's a lot you can do to celebrate the mothers we love without leaving home.
TAKE HER GLAMPING IN A WORLD HERITAGE SITE
Wolfkop Camping Villages and Nature Reserve in Citrusdal in the Cederberg are in one of the prettiest nature environments of South Africa. The camping villages are set up on the banks of the Olifants River, which has water so clean you can drink it, while the Wolfkop Nature Reserve cottages are on the side of a hill overlooking the Olifants River Valley below. The river is amazing to swim in, and safe for kids too. The good news is that Capetownmagazine.com readers can access all venues for up to 50% less, plus all activities are also discounted to half-price, so you could do something she loves every day of your escape at Wolfkop Camping Villages and Nature Reserve.
MAKE MOTHER’S DAY EXTRA SPECIAL
Make your mother feel special by treating her to an exquisite meal against the backdrop of panoramic sea views (she may even get to see whales breaching in the bay). Burgundy Restaurant in Hermanus is close to the historic old harbour and on Mother’s Day it’s offering a special: the chef’s famous speciality dish, abalone made with onion, garlic, fresh sage, dashi and cream, and served with coconut-infused jasmine rice. This will be served with a glass of local Riesling blend Blanc de Mer from award-winning Bouchard Finlayson wine estate, which perfectly complements the rich abalone dish. With its warm service, beautiful setting and excellent menu, your mother will feel very much appreciated at Burgundy Restaurant.

GET 30% OFF STAY + IN-ROOM MASSAGE
Head to Hermanus Guest House (which is having a Local is Lekker 30% off special throughout the year) in that coastal town full of excellent restaurants and surrounded by some of South Africa’s top wine farms. The place is full of treats: the beautiful Hemel-en-Aarde valley, with Creation Wines (great for a lunch to celebrate her) or stay in town and treat her to the fantastic La Pentola on the seafront. You’ll be able to watch whales or dolphins in the bay from there. Or stay home (because Hermanus Guest House makes every effort to make you feel at home) and watch from a luxurious and spacious seafront room with a complimentary glass of Raka wine. Mothers booked in for the Mother’s Day weekend will also get an extra treat: a special in-room massage. Then she can fall asleep to the sound of the sea in her (luxe) home-away-from-home at Hermanus Guest House.
SURPRISE HER WITH A VIRTUAL FAMILY LUNCH
With level four regulations, having a big family gathering is still against the rules. However, you can still send your mother a surprise Sunday lunch and have your Mother's Day meal online. Surprise mom with a prepared brunch or lunch box from Food Jams and have her indulge in a range of starters, like the artichoke, ricotta and spinach quiche to a roasted pumpkin and walnut soup. Whether she's a meat-lover or a vegetarian, she'll love either the twelve hour roast beef or the butternut and wild mushroom wellington. End your virtual family lunch with a box of chocolate chip biscuits, delicious brownies and white rose cupcakes from Food Jams.
SEND HER A BOUQUET OF ROSES
Flowers and plants are a classic Mother's Day gift, and for good reason. It's hard not to love a seasonal bouquet of tulips and roses, or a hand-decorated pot plant. Surprise mom with a delivered gift from blooming succulents and seasonal bouquets to banting gift boxes and sweet treats from Fabulous Flowers.
GET MOM A MATCHING MOTHER-DAUGHTER JEWELRY SET
Celebrate your mom with a sentimental gift of a diamond necklace or a gold-plated ring with her birthstone. Make it even more meaningful and get a matching set of mother-daughter earrings or have each other's names engraved in a pendant necklace. You’ll also help support a small local business when you purchase a Mother’s Day special voucher with a personalized message from Famke Jewellery.
YOU CAN STILL HAVE BRUNCH APART
Instead of taking mom to her favourite little brunch spot, why not bond over a home-cooked meal you make together, while still apart? Choose a meal you both agree on and have a box of groceries with all the ingredients you’ll need delivered straight to her door. Get the same sent to yours to have a virtual meal together. There are plenty of delivery-services in Cape Town to choose from.
PAMPER HER WITH A D.I.Y SPA DAY AT HOME
Mother’s Day is the perfect excuse for a spa day. Even though the spas and salons are closed it doesn’t mean we can’t treat our mother’s to a D.I.Y spa day at home. Pamper her with an antioxidant masque or a full body detox oil delivered to her door with Africology Skincare and Spa’s Mother's Day special.
HAVE A VIRTUAL QUIZ NIGHT ALL ABOUT MOM
If your mom likes personalised gifts that don’t cost money but make her feel special, a quiz night is where the kids and dad can get creative. Dig up those embarrassing old stories, get to know the ins and outs of her interests, and gather the facts only you would know - then put the whole family to the test. Make it interesting and add in a prize incentive.
HELP MAKE FOOD PACKAGES TO GIVE TO VULNERABLE COMMUNITIES
However far apart you and your mother are, you both can give back to the community wherever you are. Prepare a lunch box for a mother and her family in an impoverished community by donating to Ladles of Love.

We are putting ourselves at risk by leaving our homes to feed the homeless and if we do not feed them it poses a bigger risk. Our soup kitchens cannot stop feeding the most vulnerable members of our society, because they need it most. All monetary funds donated to Ladles Of Love will be used to purchase food and pay for operational expenses in order to keep the organization going. If you would like to support the work that we do you can donate through @PayFast, @snapscanapp or EFT by clicking the link in our bio. #teamwork #unity #strongertogether #covid #lockdown #feedingthehomeless #givingback #helpingtheneedy
HAVE HIGH-TEA IN THE LIVING ROOM
Every mother has a princess Diana in her somewhere, so to make up for not being able to physically be with mom this Sunday surprise her with a delectable Mother's Day high-tea. Bring out the fancy china, put on that Sunday dress, prop the computer on the table and celebrate the first lockdown Mother's Day with a high tea Mother's Day box from Loaves by Madame Baker.
