Causes to support for Mandela Day

Attempt a world record, walk amongst heroes, join a talk in Langa, laugh for 67 minutes + more

Last updated: Monday, 11 July 2022

In the spirit of Madiba and his vision to spread social justice and freedom for all, we’ve rounded up a few events you can support on the public holiday that celebrates him. Stand next to Madiba himself at an exhibition, take on a world record, join an informative talk in Langa and other things to do this Mandela Day.

GET COVERED IN COLOUR AT A RUN

Bring the whole family to The Twilight Run at Reddam House Constantia. Colourful powder will be thrown over you, so it works best if you are wearing old, white clothes. You are welcome to race the 5km route, or just take it slow and jog, walk (or crawl) to the finish line. Food and drinks will be on sale after the run. All profits raised will be donated to Royal Kids, a non-profit organisation invested in the well-being of children. They supply children with a warm jacket, a new pair of school shoes, socks, and a school shirt in under-resourced communities.

Date: Monday, 18 July 4.45pm - 7pm
Cost: From R67, book here

BREAK A WORLD RECORD WITH FOOD CANS

Ladles of Love is attempting to break a world record for creating the largest mosaic made out of food cans. It is calling on people across Cape Town to help place and paint 110 000 food cans. All you have to do is purchase a 67-minute time slot, or buy food cans in primary colours. Every can collected will be donated to Ladles of Love’s beneficiaries, who provide meals to the hungry.

Date: Sunday to Monday, 17 - 18 July; 9am - 4pm
Cost: R20 per can or R150 for a 67-minute time slot

TAKE PICTURES WITH YOUR HEROES

Take a selfie with Madiba, Winnie or Ghandi at The Long March to Freedom exhibition. It features 100 local and global heroes who fought against inequality and discrimination in South Africa. The statues are on a long green lawn and you can walk amongst the replicas of your heroes in life-sized bronze form. Stroll through the lawns and learn more about the people who fought for equality.  You can also take a guided tour while there.

Date: Monday to Friday, 9am - 6pm; Saturday 8am - 6pm; Sunday 9am - 4pm
Cost: R20
