South Africa, it’s over: National disaster state has been lifted

LOCKDOWN HIGHLIGHTS 

• State of disaster is lifted

• Some restrictions to continue for 30 days

• Masks still necessary indoors, but not outdoors

• Licencing for cars and drivers have a bit of grace

STATE OF DISASTER IS FINALLY OVER

On 4 April, 2022, President Cyril Ramaphosa lifted South Africa’s national state of disaster; it has been in place since March 2020. He said it had helped the government to respond to the Covid-19 crisis, and introduce measures such as the R350 social relief of distress and temporary employer/employee relief scheme. 

SOME RESTRICTIONS REMAIN TILL END APRIL

Masks are no longer mandatory when walking outside or exercising, however, they are when in confined spaces, including malls, factories, shops, offices, and public transport. Limited numbers for gatherings still applies to both indoor and outdoor venues, which can carry 50% of their capacity, provided individuals provide proof of vaccination or a negative Covid test within the last 72 hours. Where this is not possible, then the current limit applies: 1 000 people indoors and 2000 outdoors. 200 people may now attend funerals, however, night vigils and gatherings before and after funerals are still not permitted for April.

ALL RESTRICTIONS WILL BE DROPPED WITHIN A MONTH

While the state of disaster is over, the restrictions will remain in place until the end of April, until new regulations are gazetted in terms of the National Health Act. The public has until April 16 to comment on these.

EXPIRED LICENCES STILL HAVE SOME GRACE

Expired learners’ and drivers’ licences and car licence discs, vehicle registrations and professional driving permits still have some time – but renewal applications need to be finalised by 15 April. So get moving, if you haven’t already…

HOW TO REGISTER TO VACCINATE: 

You are allowed to present yourself at a vaccine sites without an appointment, however pre-registration will help speed up the process:

• You will need internet access on a smartphone, tablet or computer.

• You can apply to register online via vaccine.enroll.health.gov.za 

• You can use your South African ID number, passport number or refugee number.

• Once you have registered you will receive an SMS directing you to the nearest vaccination site to your place of residence.
