BREAKING: National lockdown update

Vaccination phase two will begin 17 May, says Alan Winde + next steps

Latest update: Thursday, 23 April 2021

LOCKDOWN HIGHLIGHTS

  • Phase two of the vaccination programme to start 17 May

  • Goal: to complete vaccinations of 60+ in Western Cape by end June

  • Covid-19 admissions and daily deaths have decreased, says Winde

  • Find out vaccination next steps

It's vital to get more vaccinations into the systems in order to flatten the potential third wave of Covid, Western Cape Premier Alan Winde said in his weekly Digicon 22 April. 111 000 people in the 60+ category have already registered for the jab, said Winde, which is impressive. He emphasized that the process is easy. The programme is well underway and the Western Cape Government expects to conclude phase two by the end of June. Find out more encouraging news, Covid-19 stats and encouraging updates.

WESTERN CAPE VACCINE PHASE TWO: HOW TO APPLY

“[W]e are on track to start our mass vaccination campaign on 17 May 2021, with vaccinators trained and vaccination sites selected across our province,” says Alan Winde. If anybody needs further help registering, you can contact the Wester Cape Contact Centre directly on 0860 142 142.

  • You can also apply online via vaccine.enroll.health.gov.za.

  • You will need to have either your ID, passport or Asylum seeker/refugee number with you.

  • Once you’ve registered, those who qualify will receive a confirmation SMS. Your details will be held in a queue that will be scheduled for a vaccination.

  • When it is your turn, the department will send an SMS with your vaccination date and place. You will be sent to the nearest vaccination centre closest to your home address.

In case of any problems, you may contact the COVID-19 Hotline at 0800 029 999.

VACCINATION NEXT STEPS

Winde added that, “Once the majority of the age band has been vaccinated, we will push to have the EVDS (Electronic Vaccination Data) system opened to lower age bands. We will ensure, through a strong communication campaign, that residents are aware of the opening of the system to younger residents.”

Phase 2a will see that the 723 160 people aged 60 and above in the Western Cape, are vaccinated by 30 June this year. Phase 2b will aim to vaccinate Western Cape’s 40 - 59-year-old residents by 30 October 2021. The final phase, phase 3, will aim to vaccinate the Western Cape’s 18 - 39-year-old residents before 28 February 2022, Alan Winde said on 22 April.

LOCKDOWN LEVEL 1: RESTRICTIONS

In the meantime, level 1 restrictions still apply:

  • The sale of alcohol may be sold according to normal license provisions, but no alcohol may be sold during curfew.

  • On-site consumption of alcohol from shebeens, restaurants and bars is allowed until 11pm. No alcohol may be sold during curfew.

  • Curfew hours are from 12pm until 4am.

  • Public spaces such as beaches, parks and dams will stay open.

  • Funeral services remain restricted to a maximum of 100 people and must stay within a two-hour limit per service.

  • Religious, social, political and cultural gatherings are permitted, subject to health protocols.

  • Gatherings may not exceed 100 people for indoor venues and 250 for outdoor venues. If the venue is too small to accommodate more than 50 people, the venue may not exceed more than 50% of its capacity.

  • Night vigils or other gatherings happening before or after funerals are not permitted.

  • Night clubs will remain closed.

  • Wearing a mask is compulsory when in public spaces. Not wearing a mask in public could get you a fine or in jail.

ALERT LEVEL 1: TRAVEL AND TRANSPORT

“The 33 land border posts that have been closed throughout this period will remain closed,” Ramaphosa said on 28 February, this year. The other 20 land border posts between South Africa and Botswana, Lesotho, Kingdom of Eswatini, Namibia, Mozambique and Zimbabwe will remain open. The five airports, OR Tambo, Cape Town, King Shaka, Kruger Mpumalanga and Lanseria airport will be open, with standard infection control measures for international travel under alert level 1.
