South Africa will remain in level 4 lockdown until 25 July, said President Cyril Ramaphosa. Over the past two weeks, the country has recorded an average of nearly 20 000 new infections daily. At present, we have over 200 000 active cases (currently infected patients). For this reason, the same rules and restrictions will be extended, with a few adjustments. The good news is that the national vaccination programme is expanding rapidly and has more than doubled in the last month, Ramaphosa said in his speech on 11 July.

The current restrictions are in place for the next 14 days and will be reassessed on Sunday, 25 July 2021.

  • Restaurants and eateries will be allowed to operate while adhering to strict health protocols. Establishments may not accommodate more than 50 people at one time and smaller venues may not accommodate more than 50% of their usual capacity.

  • Other venues, such as gyms and fitness centres, will be allowed to operate, as well as agricultural livestock and game auctions, all while adhering to strict rules and regulations.

  • Curfew hours remain from 9pm - 4am. All non-essential establishments should close by 8pm.

  • The sale of alcohol for on-site and off-site consumption is not allowed.

  • Travel in and out of Gauteng is not allowed for leisure purposes. Find out more below.

  • All indoor and outdoor gatherings are prohibited.

  • Funerals and cremations are allowed, but all social distancing and health protocols must be followed and attendance may not exceed 50 people.

  • Night vigils or other gatherings happening before or after funerals are not permitted.

  • Public spaces like beaches and parks are open, but gatherings are not allowed.

  • Visits to old-age homes or care centres and other congregated settings will be restricted.

  • Schools will remain closed until 26 July.

  • Wearing a mask is compulsory when in public spaces. Not wearing a mask in public could get you a fine or in jail.

  • Night clubs will remain closed.

Our national vaccination programme is expanding with over 4.2 million South Africans already vaccinated. 1 million of those were achieved over the past seven weekdays, says Ramaphosa. More good news: the pace of the vaccination has more than doubled over the past month and we can only expect that to continue with an average of 190 000 people vaccinated each weekday, the president said on 11 July.

From 15 July, the next age group can register for the vaccine: 35+. By 1 August President Cyril Ramaphosa hopes vaccinations for the new group will commence, starting with the remaining essential workers, basic education employees and the police and defence force. In the Western Cape, the Athlone Stadium will be Cape Town’s first drive-through and walk-through mass vaccination site by early August, here’s how it will work.

All vaccination sites allow you to walk in and register in person, however, if you are eligible, pre-registration will help speed up the process:

  • You will need internet access on a smartphone, tablet or computer

  • If you are 60+ you can apply to register online via

  • You can use your South African ID number, passport number or refugee number

  • Once you have registered you will receive an SMS directing you to the nearest vaccination site to your place of residence

It was first detected in India last year in March and is noticeably more contagious than the Beta variant that was dominant in South Africa. Those previously infected with the Beta variant will still need to be vigilant. You may not have full protection against the Delta variant and may still be at risk for re-infection. However, “preliminary data from other countries suggests that it is not more severe”, Ramaphosa confirmed in his speech.

Travel in and out of Gauteng for leisure is prohibited. You may travel into the province for work, business, or commercial travel, transit through airports or for the transport of goods. If you are not at your place of residence, you are allowed to return home to or from Gauteng. Inter-provincial travel between other provinces is allowed.

Currently, the 20 land border posts between South Africa and Botswana, Lesotho, Kingdom of Eswatini, Namibia, Mozambique and Zimbabwe will also remain open at level 4 lockdown. International and interprovincial travel is allowed in all provinces besides Gauteng, with the exceptions noted above. The following airports are open: OR Tambo International Airport, King Shaka International Airport, Cape Town International Airport, Lanseria International Airport and Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport.

Long-haul flights are permitted during curfew hours and all travellers must provide a valid certificate of a negative Covid-19 on arrival. A Covid-19 test should be completed 72 hours before departure and if you cannot provide a valid test you will be required to do an antigen test on arrival at your own cost when travelling in alert level 4.

There is an app available that uses no data to download and alert you if you have been exposed to the virus. Everyone with a smartphone can download the contact tracing app
