All you need to know about Zoom Whitening in Cape Town

A safe, in-chair treatment available at over 30 dentists in Cape Town

“Amazing things happen when patients have their teeth whitened with Philips Zoom products,” says Emma King, Zoom Whitening’s head of marketing and clinical training. Many of the smokers that have sat in Emma’s chair end up quitting the habit, she adds. That is how life-changing teeth whitening can be.

“Whiter teeth make you look younger and healthier. It makes the irregularities in the mouth, like crowding, seem less obvious,” she adds. Zoom Whitening has been used by everyone from Miss Universe Zozibini Tunzi, to cricketer Herschelle Gibbs and SA actor Siv Ngesi.

The Zoom Professional in-chair procedure is a non-invasive procedure that takes about an hour, and is safe and virtually painless. It’s also great value for money. It involves applying a gel to your teeth, which is activated by a special blue LED light.

Over 30 dentists in and around Cape Town offer the treatment, and they’ll come up with a personalised plan that suits your particular needs.

“I don’t like one size fits all approach,” says Emma, who’s also a practitioner. “If people are worried about the sensitivity, they can ask to divide up the sessions. My big thing is to prevent sensitivity rather than deal with it afterwards.”

Teeth whitening is often considered the domain of reality TV stars and models (you may have even seen Zoom Whitening on Extreme Makeovers), but it's actually a safe and affordable treatment option accessible to everyone.

It’s a real confidence boost, and helps you approach just about any occasion a little more boldly. Whether you’re getting married or getting back on the dating scene, lining up some important job interviews, or even getting a divorce, a bright white grin can make all the difference.

Besides boosting your self-esteem, King says it tends to get people looking after their teeth a lot better after they have a new smile that they are proud of. There are also health benefits: the hydrogen peroxide is antibacterial, and people that have better looking teeth now want to look after them better, brush better, come in more often for check ups, adds Emma.

“So overall, it’s an amazing improvement in your oral health,” says Emma. ”You’ll also find that you’ll look younger, healthier and more presentable.”

Over the counter and non-approved home whitening products can remove surface stains, but in the long run damage your teeth, explains Emma. “These products are usually very acidic and abrasive and can cause severe damage to the teeth and gums”, she adds, “but The Philips Zoom professional whitening products change the internal colour using hydrogen peroxide and are applied as an alkaline and not an acid, meaning no damage to the teeth”.

She does recommend using Zoom’s at-home whitening products to maintain the shade you like, as part of the plan you and your dentist come up with. You will get instant results after just one session, and the best way to keep those results is by keeping up with the home treatments.

South Africa’s standards of dentistry are among the highest in the world, so many international travellers have the procedure done while they are on holiday and others turn their trip into a “dental safari”, says Emma.

Zoom treatments in South Africa are also affordable, even for locals - so when you factor in the exchange rate, it’s really cheap for visitors.

A majority of the Cape Town dentists offer the Philips Zoom Endless Whitening Program. If you book and pay for a full in-chair whitening, you’ll get 3 free whitening syringes plus free customized take home bleaching trays at your first appointment. Visit the same dentist or hygienist every six months for a cleaning / check up and in return for your commitment, they will keep your teeth healthy and white for life.
