TASTE CYPRIOT-GREEK FOODS IN CITY CENTRE

The newest addition to the inner city’s foodie scene comes with punchy flavours and vacay vibes. Ouzeri in Wale Street specialises in traditional Cyprus and Greece foods, whie mimicking the look and feel of a traditional tavern with sleek white walls, arches and marble pedestals

HANG OUT AT THIS ALL-DAY CAFE BAR

Origin Coffee by day – Cafe Noir by night. This new gem in De Waterkant was inspired by the all-day cafes in France and Italy. It first opened in March 2022 and has since become a popular evening hangout spot (serving some stunning cocktails, craft beers, wines and of course, coffee). You can also snack on their small-plate menu.

Must-try: The strawberry and green tea cocktail served with imphepho flowers. These flowers were burnt in African cultures to cleanse and ward off bad spirits

DINE AT A COURTYARD GREEK CAFE

Dreaming of a holiday in Greece amongst blue and white houses, cobblestone streets and an ocean view? Santorini, in Newlands, takes you right there with its Grecian street-style interior, painted sea view walls and a large boat mounted to the wall. Eat traditional Greek tapas or classics like moussaka, spanakopita and lamb.

Happy Boy Cáfe, in one of Cape Town’s most lively districts, Observatory, is for everyone – from students and artists to business owners. It serves classic South African street foods. DINE AT AN UPMARKET HALAAL RESTAURANT

This warm and cosy space in Milnerton has a hearty menu. Durban-born and Westville-trained chef, Mohamed Ifthikaar Shaik, serves a variety of Durban curries, as well as steaks, seafood and yummy desserts. Go for breakfast, lunch or dinner at Nouveau Coffee & Grill.

TASTE COASTAL MEXICAN WITH A MODERN TWIST 

Tantalize your taste buds with an explosion of Mexican flavours like tacos and homemade tortillas, but with an elevated twist. Located where Chefs Warehouse once stood, Hacienda is bringing “the spirit of Baja California to the tables of Cape Town”. This is a dining experience like no other.⁣

WELCOME THE BAILEY ON BREE

A bakery, brasserie, champagne bar and whiskey bar all under one roof and one name – Liam Tomlin’s newest hot spot is dripping in style. The Bailey is located opposite Tomlin’s original Chefs Warehouse site and boasts a café, brasserie, champagne bar and a whiskey bar.

Must-try: If you're dining at Café Bailey, you have to try the Pain au Chocolat (it is out of this world good).

DISCOVER A HIDDEN GEM IN PLATTEKLOOF

Beano Coffee Co brings city vibes to the Northern Suburbs. It’s a minimalist-style coffee shop painted in neutral colours and filled with lush green plants, creating a clean, modern feel. Go for the coffee and stay for brekkie or lunch. Order a granola bowl, croissant stuffed with basil pesto, mozzarella cheese and tomato, a steak or chicken toastie, or other yummy baked goods. FEAST ON LOCAL ABALONE WITH A SEA VIEW

Perlemoen is a new, first-of-a-kind restaurant, set in a museum in the Old Harbour. It’s the only eatery in South Africa that focuses on abalone, which is harvested fresh (and legally) from a local farm. Enjoy its versatile seafood menu (is there anything better than eating fish by the sea) and take a stroll down to the water and learn about its history.

Must-try: Perlemoen Benedict: toasted muffin, with creamy abalone hollandaise, topped with bacon crisps.

VISIT THIS SEXY ROOFTOP LOUNGE

Allure Rooftop Lounge in De Waterkant offers a one-of-a-kind experience. Unwind on the stylish urban terrace while sipping cocktails at sunset. Try the Corn Ribs, Sticky Spare Ribs, Lamb Kebabs or other dishes from the excellent halaal menu. The kitchen is open till 2am, there’s DJs and live events, plus free parking at Allure.

SMOKE A CIGAR AT THE SMALLEST BAR IN STELLIES

In the bustling Dorp Street, under the acorn trees, you’ll find an old-school bar. Blix Tavern boasts old-Western decor, craft beers and a hidden cigar alley (and it sells cigars, too). It’s a great spot for a nightcap on the veranda or a cosy date night.

Must-try: Blix specialises in hand crafted beer. Try a Lager, Weiss or the Guest Brew (varies between Pale Ale or Blonde)

DRINK BUBBLE TEA AT THIS PLAYFUL SPOT 

Susu Bubble Tea opened its doors at the end of April 2022, in De Waterkant. The interior is bright, playful, and full of colour, any Instagrammer’s dream. Try interesting drinks such as milk tea, mango-banana fruit tea with pearls (yummy bubbles bursting with flavour), or a Japanese Green Tea Latte with Red Bead. There are plenty of flavours to experiment with at this new gem.

DRINK FINE WINE IN A SECLUDED COURTYARD

Historic Quoin Rock Wine Estate has launched an elegant space to showcase local, small-batched wines of the Knorhoek Valley. You’ll find Qbar Wine Bar in a vibrant, secluded courtyard in Stellenbosch; it’s the perfect spot to wind down or catch up with friends.

EAT CRÊPES AT THIS NORTHERN SUBURBS GEM

This French-themed café opened in March 2022 and has become a hot spot for families in the Northern Suburbs (it is well worth the drive). Unwind in its cosy indoor atmosphere and order crêpes, croissants and coffee at Voilá Crêperie. Plus you can also enjoy a round of putt-putt with the kids.

Una Más means “one more” in Spanish, a fitting name for this newly opened restaurant that serves more-ish Mexican food and drinks. From house-made crispy tortillas to spicy and creamy cocktails, you'll always want one more. It’s an intimate, trendy and vibey spot already popular amongst Sea Point locals

There’s a new kid on the block in De Waterkant, and it’s a siren for all our sweet-toothed friends. From Japanese cheesecakes to Korean macarons, you’ll want to try everything on the menu. DINE IN ONE OF SOUTH AFRICA’S OLDEST BARNS

Chef Bertus Basson’s newest restaurant opened its doors in March 2022, in Stellenbosch. It’s on Vergenoegd Löw Wine Estate and gives diners a taste of favourite South African flavours in a historic, yet modern setting. Think fish paste on toast and quail, to liver parfait and African grains. You’ll be wowed by the 3- or 5-course menu at Clara's Barn.

EAT AFFORDABLE FINE FOOD IN STELLENBOSCH

Dine in a historical building in Stellenbosch with a surprisingly affordable menu. This new gem first opened its doors mid-February 2022 and serves  South African food with hints of Asian flavours. The restaurant has wooden tables, plush green booths, arched mirrors and accents of  palm-leaf wallpaper. Dine finely with history at Post & Pepper.

ORDER A BUTTERY BREKKIE IN THE CITY  

Everything’s made with butter at this all-day breakfast and bistro bar that opened its doors in the heart of the Mother City mid-2021. For under R50 each, you can get a slice of homemade sourdough with an abundance of butter, or a thick slice of nutty banana bread, a scone with berry jam, two buttered mielies, buttered popcorn, or The Old Boy (a soft-boiled egg with dippy sourdough soldiers). SIT WITH THE COOL KIDS AT A TRENDY RESTAURANT

They say blondes have more fun, and that’s definitely the case with this new kid on Kloof Street. There’s a new experiential art gallery in Sea Point, and it has some exciting tricks up its sleeve. Cabo Beach Club is where you’ll find the sophisticated and chic summer vibes: good food and drinks, beautiful views and music, pools and views of the sea. At night the vibe becomes more clubby. La Grapperia has a cute beach bar in the Winelands, complete with a sandy white beach and loungers.
