Work Up a Sweat in Commemoration of The Father of Our Nation
Lace up your sneakers and join locals for a walk in celebration of Nelson Mandela
On Sunday 22 July, the first Sunday after Nelson Mandela's birthday, Cape Town is hosting a recreational walk and jog to commemorate the South African icon. The walk is a way for South Africans to come together to pay homage at the place where he delivered his first speech as a free man, after serving 27 years in prison on Robben Island.
This event enables ordinary people to pay homage to him and to contribute to the empowerment of our learners. It is open to all members of the community with the first 1000 who enter being guaranteed a spot. Athletes and ordinary citizens alike are invited to take part and all proceeds will go towards local youth empowerment in the form of sport programmes.
The 6.7km walk starts at 10am at City Hall and the route winds through Darling Street, past Christiaan Barnard and the Artscape Theatre complex. It ends back in Darling Street, in front of the City Hall, where Mandela delivered his speech on February 11, 1990 in front of a huge audience.
