Wine Down Every Weekend at The Wine Glass

Great specials: 2-for-1 on Fridays, oysters and bubbly on Sundays

Here are two great reasons to start and end your weekend in Hermanus.

The Wine Glass, a wine bar and restaurant, has a 2-for-1 special on selected food and drinks on Wine Down Fridays (4pm–6pm), and on Sundays (12pm–4pm), there are oysters and bubbly specials on the terrace surrounded by art galleries. Set in the heart of the historic Old Town it is an upmarket yet unpretentious space, where you can enjoy 96 wines and 12 bubblies (MCC) from over 40 local wine farms. All wines are available by the glass and in tasting flights.

40 FARMS UNDER ONE ROOF
The Wine Glass is exclusively dedicated to wines from the Walker Bay region, which makes it the perfect springboard for identifying the types of wine you like and farms and areas you’d like to explore further.

You can taste wines from Botrivier, Hemel & Aarde, Stanford, Elim and Agulhas. There’s an excellent price range, from everyday affordable to premium wines. What’s useful is that you can order by the glass and then buy the bottle if you like what you taste.

TAKE A WINE JOURNEY
A horizontal tasting lets you compare a range of wines from the same varietal but different producers. This gives you the opportunity to first taste wines from different estates, before deciding on which ones you’d like to visit. You can however also purchase wines for home consumption from The Wine Glass - at cellar door prices.

Something fun to try in a group is the popular blind tasting, where you can test your palate (and challenge your friends). You have to guess which wine is from what farm, based on the tasting notes provided. For beer lovers there is also a tasting of local craft beers (all on tap).

PERLEMOEN OR GAME?
At The Wine Glass, the food and wine is of equal rank and importance. The restaurant serves locally inspired cuisine (with small and big plate options). Top sellers include seafood, such as crayfish, perlemoen and oysters, various mediterranean and asian Chef’s Plates, and the South African menu, which features unique regional flavours such as game spring rolls, traditional curries and a cheese and biltong platter.

If you really want to get to know the Walker Bay in terms of food and wine, the best place to start is at The Wine Glass.
