Will Cape Town City Finally Strings Some Wins Together?

The Citizens are trying to build some rhythm against Bidvest Wits

Despite a recent win, Cape Town City’s form has remained rocky despite hopes that appointing a new coach would change their fortunes. They welcome Bidvest Wits to the Cape Town Stadium on 18 January 2020. Will they be the ones receiving the lesson, or dishing it out?

Cape Town City started life post-Benni McCarthy with an impressive 5-3 home win over Polokwane City. But since then their form under the new coach, Dutchman Jan Olde Riekerink, has been shaky with two draws and four losses (one of which was against Wits). They recently earned a hard-fought victory against Baroka FC, but have another testing away fixture against top of the log Kaizer Chiefs before welcoming Wits to the Cape Town Stadium.

During that same period, Wits had three wins and two draws. One of those draws was against defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns.

Wits are currently in fourth position on the PSL log, seven places higher than Cape Town City. Considering their form and reputation as one of the top sides in the PSL, they are going to be a tough challenge for The Citizens.

City hasn’t been able to duplicate the form that made them title contenders last season. Besides the 5-3 win over Polokwane City, goals have been hard to come by, with just three goals in the six matches that followed that result. They’re currently in 11th position, dangerously close to the relegation zone, and will need a run of positive results to avoid a relegation battle later in the season.

This could mean a cagey affair at the Cape Town Stadium as City try to nullify the Wits threat, while improving their own attack at the other end of the field.

Tickets cost between R20 and R150, and can be bought at Computicket. The match starts at 6pm but get there early to avoid congestion.
