Whale, Wine and Wors Tours with Wine Flies

Hop on board a fun-filled minibus and explore the hidden gems of the Western Cape

“Listen I’ve sent these guys a bunch of emails and called their shells a bunch of times,” Lord Terrence, one of the tour guides begins, “but whales are busy creatures. They might not be able to pay us a visit,” he jokes.  This is the type of light-hearted playfulness you can expect on this 12-hour tour. Owned by Francois van Binsbergen, Wine Flies regularly dazzles visitors with their Cape Winelands and Forgotten Route to Matjiesfontein tours. During whale watching season, the boutique touring company adds another expedition to their oeuvre: The Big Fat Whale, Wine and Wors Tour.

Running every Tuesday and Thursday from August until December, the tour whisks guests off to three popular destinations just outside Cape Town - Stellenbosch, Grabouw and Hermanus – in a bid to afford locals and tourists the opportunity to discover the hidden gems of the Winelands in a laidback and offbeat manner.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE WHALE, WINE AND WORS TOUR

The first stop is visiting one of the oldest towns in South Africa (Stellenbosch) where explorers will get to:

  • Stop over at the Victorian-style trade shop Oom Samie se Winkel, which stocks everything from a selection of animal hide and vintage clothing to dried fruits and boutique wines.

  • Head to the Middelvlei Wine Farm for a wine tasting and cellar tour (sampling vino straight from the barrels is also on the cards).

A short, scenic drive later, guests arrive at the Elgin Valley to:

  • Meet  ‘garagiste’ William Everson at his converted shipping container, where he sells his handcrafted ciders. You will have a chance to sample some of his drink, which is paired with biltong and boerewors respectively.

Then it’s off to Hermanus for lunch:

  • Mind your feet as the waves crash at the foot of Bientang's Cave restaurant. The eatery boasts some of the most spectacular views in the Western Cape – and you might catch a glimpse of a whale or two.

  • The only brewery on the continent to accept bitcoin as payment, Honingklip Brewery offers a tasting of locally brewed beer.

The final stop is a wine tasting at Barton Vineyards and Villas to sip and swirl some of its award-winning reds and whites before heading back to the Mother City.

COST AND BOOKING FOR THE WHALE, WINE AND WORS TOUR
Offering great value, this Wine Flies tour is just R820/p, which includes all tastings, pairings and lunch. Running every Tuesday and Thursday from August until December, the tour leaves at 7:30am and returns around 6pm. The Wine Flies team can pick guests up from their accommodation in the city centre area and also drop them off after the tour. Wine Flies can accommodate up to 13 guests and groups of five or more, making a reservation together, get an incredible discount.
