As part of the annual Fugard Bioscope World Arts Cinema Season, performing arts lovers can catch productions from around the world without leaving the Mother City. These high definition recorded live screenings of the best theatre, opera and ballet performances from the top global stages are shown at the Fugard Theatre Bioscope on selected Sundays from January to August 2017.
A screening of The Threepenny Opera, from London’s The National Theatre, will be shown at 11am at the Fugard Theatre Bioscope on Sunday, 29 January 2017. This vivid and dark-witted musical is a new adaptation by award-winning playwright Simon Stephens of Bertolt Brecht’s classic play, and features music by Kurt Weill and is directed by Rufus Norris.
The musical follows the story of London’s most notorious criminal, “Mack the Knife” Macheath (played by Rory Kinnear) who marries Polly Peachum (played by Rosalie Craig), daughter of Mr and Mrs Peachum who control all the beggars in London. As the Londoners get ready for the royal coronation, the Peachums brace themselves for a bumper day in the beggary business, but their daughter hasn’t returned home from the night before. While keeping an eye on the city’s underground, the Peachums search for their daughter and conspire to have Macheath hanged.
