Soccer: Can Cape Town City Get A Home Win?

After two home defeats on the trot the Citizens will look to change their form in the Cape when Lamontville Golden Arrows visit.

Benni McCarthy’s Cape Town City will be looking to get its second home win in four when the team hosts Lamontville Golden Arrows in Cape Town on Saturday, 22 September at 3pm.

The Citizens has lost two of its last three games on home soil, last beating Stellenbosch FC at Athlone stadium on 10 August. Its had a stop-start campaign overall and will want to build a solid run of home form to get the season going.

GOLDEN ARROWS’ FORM
Golden Arrows are slightly better off than City, two positions higher in the log with two wins, a draw and a loss. Their one defeat was a heavy one though: 5-0 to Bloemfontein Celtic. They have shored up their defence since then, only letting in one goal in two games and earning a credible 0-0 draw against Orlando Pirates.

NB! Golden Arrows play a home game against Amazulu in Durban before coming to Cape Town to play City.

CAPE TOWN CITY’S FORM
Since beating Cape rivals Stellenbosch FC, Cape Town City have struggled to find their rhythm. They suffered a home defeat in the MTN Top 8 tournament at Newlands Stadium to Polokwane City, then lost another home game to Kaizer Chiefs at the same ground.

In between those matches they earned a credible draw against PSL Champions Mamelodi Sundowns, but are currently languishing in eighth place on the PSL log, which is not where they want to be considering their fourth placed finish last season.

NB! Cape Town City play an away match in Pretoria against Supersport United before coming back to Cape Town For the match against Golden Arrows.

WHAT CAN WE EXPECT
Head Coach Benni McCarthy was frustrated after Cape Town City’s last home defeat to Kaizer Chiefs. The former Bafana Bafana striker believed Chiefs were lucky to win, and lamented his team’s inability to take their chances in the first half, which they dominated. Speaking to Supersport McCarthy said, “"When you create the chances that you do and don't punish the better teams in this league, you're going to end up rueing your opportunities and that's exactly what happened to us.”

Cape Town City will want to improve on this weakness, and play on the front foot against Golden Arrows. This could prove tricky with the Durban side’s recent stingy defensive displays.

Benni will look to the positives though, knowing that his team held their own against potential title contenders, and will hope that his post match words motivates his charges to do better.

THE CAPE TOWN STADIUM SITUATION
Cape Town City have been hermits, playing their three home games so far at Athlone Stadium and then at Newlands Stadium twice.

This is because the pitch at their usual home ground, Cape Town Stadium, was deemed unfit to Fifa standards. The stadium underwent mandatory maintenance this year, which included re-laying the pitch, and stadium officials say that, due to unexpected rainy weather, the pitch hasn’t knitted as they expected it to.

There has been no word on whether the pitch will be ready for the match with Golden Arrows, but we will provide updates as they come in.
