Shop Unique Handcrafted Goods At The Biggest Gathering Of Potters In Africa

The market has been around for 50 years and The Test Kitchen’s Luke Dale Roberts sources crockery there.

Spend a relaxing Saturday morning browsing stalls of beautiful and unique handmade goods. You’ll discover a wide range of earthenware, ceramics, porcelain and stoneware crafted by professional and amateurs at the Rondebosch Potters Market.

LONG HISTORY AND BIG REPUTATION
John Bauer from John Bauer Ceramics, who is involved in organising the market, says that the Potters Market has been running for 50 years hence its claim to be the biggest gathering of potters in Africa.

NO INFLATION AND EASY DISCOUNTS
At the Potters Market, you’re buying directly from the source, so there’s no middle man, and no inflated retail prices. Prices are also excellent and the standard of work is extremely high. You’ll find bargains; and even if a piece has just a hairline crack, it’s marked down to a fraction of the usual cost.

TRADERS AND GOODS
You can expect over 100 potters hailing from all over South Africa. There’s even a trader from Malawi who drives between the two countries to collect resources. There will be pottery by well-known artists Steve Shapiro, Clementina van der Walt, John Bauer and Hennie Meyer Ceramics, and you can find unique items like fire pots by accomplished potter Daniel Griffin.

Ceramic jewellery is trending at the moment and you can find some lovely pieces at the market. Stock up on bowls, pots, plates, mugs, jugs, sculptures, vases and works of art. Luke Dale Roberts uses the Potters Market to source crockery for The Test Kitchen and a couple from Ireland fly in to attend the Potters Market to buy stock for their gallery.

FIND A POTTERY CLASS
With a well-established pottery industry, SA is a global ceramic hub with hundreds of potters in the country. Here, you’ll find a vibrant and enthusiastic group of people who want to welcome you into their healthy and relaxed subculture. The market is a great place to find pottery classes that suit you. Walk around and when you see things you like, simply enquire with the vendor about pottery classes.

THE VENUE
Rondebosch Park is located on the corner of Campground and Sandown Roads and is used for the Potters Market twice a year in March and November. The open park is laid out with walking paths, avenues of trees and flora, benches and lawns. There is an upgraded play area for children and public toilets are available. The market is dog-friendly, but please put a leash on your pooch.

REFRESHMENTS
There are tables and chairs in the food area where you can find German confectionary and wonderful cakes to complement your coffee.

ATTENDING THE MARKET
Entry to the market is free. There is a big parking lot across the road where you can park. To get the best selection, it’s a good idea to arrive as soon as the gates open at 8am because things move fast. The Market ends between 2pm and 4pm.
