Signal Hill is a notoriously popular New Year’s Day hike in Cape Town and for good reason: it’s the perfect relaxed hike with breathtaking views. But, you can also hike Cape Town’s lesser-known trails which equal it in beauty. Pro tip: don’t forget your costume and a towel. January is a scorcher, and a lot of these routes have hidden natural pools and dams you can dive right into. Whether you’d like to zig-zag up Devil’s Peak or sit inside the giant Woodstock cave, you can take your pick of over 20 or more hikes around Cape Town

When: These hiking routes are open all year round
Where: It’s up to you which hike you’d like to take

If you're feeling like a relaxed picnic with the little ones Boschendal’s New Year's Picnic Bash is right up your alley. There's a picnic basket for everyone: there’s a fresh vegetable salad with shredded roast chicken and a decadent chocolate cheesecake in the main basket, or if you're vegetarian, you'll love the aubergine-and-mushroom salad. It comes with a miso dressing with lemon atchar and roasted potatoes. Plus, there is also a kids menu and a vegetarian kids option.
When: 1 January 2021, 12pm - 5pm
Where: Werf Farm Picnics

Pniel Road Groot, Franschhoek | 021 870 4200 |

Pack up the kids and head out for a picnic lunch on the sprawling lawns of Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens. You can pack your own picnic lunch, but if you want to splurge Fynkos restaurant at the Kirstenbosch Tea Room has two drool-worthy picnic platters. Think delectable finger food of chilli poppers, spinach-and-feta quiche and rare roast sirloin steak pieces. Or, if you'd prefer to eat inside, Moyo Restaurant serves delicious South Africa dishes. The classic Moyo burger is always a winner but if you’d like to try something different give the oxtail amos a try. They are famous for it. You can’t leave without taking a scenic walk around the many paths at Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens
