Prince Albert From Morning to Evening
Epic foodie experiences from coffee to dinner Monday to Saturday at the African Relish Chef's Café
An African Relish experience has a delightful start and end: begin the day with coffee and Karoo carrot cake and end biting into crispy-fried Boere Asian dumplings on the verandah in the evening at the African Relish Chef's Café, which is open for 12 hours most days.
The setting for African Relish, which has a cooking school, deli, Chef's Café and rustic and luxurious accommodation, is Prince Albert in the Karoo. A place with loads to offer, from trips into the scenic Swartberg Mountains to foodie tours and entertaining cooking lessons.
SIP COFFEE OVERLOOKING OLIVE TREES
The Chef's Café spills onto the verandah at the back of the Langhuis and on the front lawn, where seats overlook the olive orchard. Sip coffee at the long counter in the Langhuis or head to the verandah or into the garden with a cup of Terbordore coffee (R15–R20) and a slice of cake – try Rogaya’s carrot cake or apple-and-almond cake (R40).
End the day with savoury finger foods such as Punjabi samoosas with spicy potato filling with homemade tomato and chilli jam or Boere Dim Sum, crispy-fried Asian dumplings filled with coriander-spiced boerewors meat, with dipping sauce (R55).
THE DINNER MENU IS OUTSTANDING
Resident chef Alexa Wiehahn plans menus around seasonal ingredients and develops new recipes from traditional dishes. Her menu includes smoked marinated kudu carpaccio served on choux pastry, with garden greens, pickled cucumber, capers and horseradish cream (R85), and the dinner menu currently features Karoo lamb ragout, a slow-roasted shoulder of lamb cooked in red wine, garlic, onion and garden herbs served with, mustard seed mash, spicy roasted butternut and spekboom salsa (R145)
KAROO PICNIC? STOCK UP AT THE DELI
Prince Albert is set in the gorgeous Karoo landscape, and there are plenty of places to head to for a picnic. The best place to stock is African Relish’s Deli. It opened this year and is a source of everything delicious: fresh quiche, pies, breads, seasonal fruit cordials, wine and braai packs, as well as pies, meatballs, tomato-chilli jam, pickled carrots and cucumbers, tomato passata, preserved lemons and breads from the African Relish kitchen. Plus there are local cheeses, charcuterie, milk, pasta and other pantry essentials, as well as accessories and gifts.
Deli hours: Mondays 9am–5pm; Tuesday–Saturday 9am–9pm
Make a meal out of your trip and stay longer. You can custom-make a cooking class at African Relish Cooking School or book one of its many set courses, and use the non-cooking hours to explore Prince Albert.
