Powerpuff Girls Art Factory Exhibition

Sugar, spice and everything alternative

Prepare yourself 90’s kids because this First Thursday, you’ll be treated to a total reimagining of the beloved Powerpuff Girls at the PPG Art Factory Exhibit being set up at 91 Loop Street. In case you didn’t know, First Thursday is on Thursday, 6 April 2017 and we cannot wait to see what this awesomely unique experience has in store for us!

Everyone knows the Powerpuff Girls but let’s just go over a little refresher. Bubbles, Blossom and Buttercup used to light up the screen on Cartoon Network back in the day as they went to work fighting crime in the imaginary city of Townsville. Their main enemies included was Mojo Jojo and the very Rocky-Horror Picture Show themed faux, HIM. Bubbles, the cute one, added some humanity to the group. Blossom, the leader, gave girls a sense of power and leadership and finally, Buttercup (ironically) was the tough one. That girl taught a generation of girls that it’s okay to be strong and tough, in fact, girls like that are needed.

In the very special exhibition, and with permission of Cartoon Network of course, ten local artists were given the Powerpuff Girls as a brief and told to reinvent them in an alternative context. This doesn’t just mean a different town, it means a full overhaul of their image. These very talented artists’ screen prints will be displayed for your perusal and critique at 91 Loop Street in Cape Town’s vibey CBD.

At the opening of the exhibition on First Thursday, guest will also be treated to helping to design a one-of-a-kind PowerPuff Girls tote bag. Be a part of something cool and unique at First Thursday this month! The artists that are exhibiting their works on First Thursday (and beyond) include Tandiwe Tsabala, Karabo Poppy Moletsane, Kgabo Mametja, Jeanne Fourie and more.

This initiative also has a charity benefactor and it’s one that Cape Town really needs to know more about. Rock Girl South Africa is a charity aimed at the female sex, and making sure that women and girls all over SA get the resources they need to thrive. They provide mentorship, group projects, workshops and more to women across the country. All of the proceeds from the sale of the artworks will go straight to Rock Girl South Africa.

The exhibition runs from Thursday, 6 April to Tuesday, 2 May 2017 at 91 Loop Street.
