Heroes Assemble to Save A Local Theatre
See an award winning play and help actors save the Muizenberg theatre that started their careers from closing its doors.
The Masque Theatre in Muizenberg is on the brink of closing down. But the cosy venue at the heart of the seaside town has heroes to save it. Performers, most of whom started their careers at this theatre, are banding together to save it.
They are doing a rendition of the American play Proof at the Masque Theatre, with seven shows over two weeks from 15-18 May, and then from 23-25 May.
THE THEATRE AT THE HEART OF MUIZENBERG
The Masque Theatre is a professional and community theatre space in the heart of Muizenberg. It hosts everything from live productions to soirees and recitals, film shows and more. It has a strong following, and is often used by community groups and has given opportunities to many up and coming actors and playwrights to showcase their work.
The Theatre also has a fully licensed bar and is wheelchair friendly.
The play is an American production that debuted in 2000. It won a Pulitzer Prize and a Tony Award and centers around the daughter of a genius mathematician, who herself is a math genius. After her father dies, she discovers a revolutionary proof about prime numbers in his office, and in trying to prove the authorship of the paper, starts dealing with fears of becoming mentally ill, like her father did.
The Masque Theatre production is set in current day South Africa and will focus around themes of female empowerment and mental illness awareness.
The Masque Theatre production is directed by Michaela Richards, and will have performances by Jess Pybus, Quinlan Oliphant and voice work by radio DJ Guy McDonald.
TICKETS TO PROOF AT THE MASQUE THEATRE
Tickets cost R100 and can be purchased at the theatre box office. For weekday show the starting time is 8pm. Saturday will have two shows, one at 2:30pm and another at 6:30pm.
BECOME AN ACTOR FOR A DAY
Did you ever dream of becoming an actor? Well the masque theatre is giving you the chance to do just that … for a day at least.
Whether you have acting experience or not, they’re giving you the chance to act in a short play on their stage, with some of their professional actors.
You’ll rehearse a few pre-selected pieces and a 10-minute comedy, with script in hand (so you don’t have to learn lines).
Later on you’ll perform in front of a pop up audience comprising of people you’ve invited and local community groups who form the core of the Masque Theatre’s audience.
The experience costs R400pp (R350pp for more than two people).
