Celebrate 50 years with art workshops, walkabouts and discussions
Last updated: Wednesday, 4 May 2022
The Irma Stern Museum turns 50 this year and in honour of its half centenary, the museum is hosting a series of exhibitions and events throughout the year. Join the celebrations by visiting the permanent exhibitions, taking part in workshops and walkabouts with internationally renowned artist Athi-Patra Ruga – you can even join an educational programme.

JOIN THE ATHI & IRMA CONVERSATION
From March to June, visitors can explore the contemporary art of Athi-Patra Ruga, a renowned South African artist. Ruga’s art has exhibited in Zeitz Mocaa, the Norval Foundation and at the Investec Art Fair.
This is an exhibition of works Ruga produced during his time as a UCT resident and a selection of loan works. Image: Luke Doman (@lukebelldoman)
The exhibit “Athi & Irma…an intervention” creates a dialogue between the two artists, as Ruga’s work draws inspiration from the museum's current collection. His canvases will be hung among Stern’s pieces in the museum, and as part of the exhibition Ruga will present a number of learner engagements and walkabouts (see schedule below).

VISIT IRMA STERN’S STUDIO
Stern’s permanent exhibition is hosted in her home, which includes her studio, lounge and the well-known dining room. Visitors are free to walk through the house and explore Stern’s famous portraits, and a series of biblical paintings and artefacts she collected from her widespread travels (including ancient Roman and Pre-Columbian American pieces).
The museum is a unique experience of the space Irma Stern worked and lived in. Image: Irma Stern Museum
There is also a lush garden, which you can stroll through. It’s open to all UCT students, staff and visitors. Host meetings, enjoy a picnic, linger on with a book and read under a tree or socialise.
The garden is also used as a venue for events. Image: Irma Stern Museum
