Gotta Catch ‘Em All With the Durbanville Pokémon League

Relive your childhood and have some fun playing the Pokémon Card Game

Gotta catch ‘em all – this is the legendary line which brought Pokémon to the homes of many children across the globe. Every Saturday, from 26 May 2018 to 22 December 2018, head to Village Walk Shopping Centre for the weekly Durbanville Pokémon League.

Every Saturday battle it out with your fellow Pokémon lovers as you display your skills at casual play, card trading, deck building, learning how to play and most importantly, fun all round. The Durbanville Pokémon League hosts a tournament on every Saturday of the month, which allows members to test their skills and knowledge they have learned over the past week.

League cups are on offer every quarter, where members battle it out for champion points. These points are accumulated for esteemed World Invitations. Pre-card releases also take place quarterly and it allows you the chance to play with new Pokemon before anyone has even seen them.

Newbies are encouraged to join as there are many masters available to teach you their tricks. This is a kid-friendly league so parents can drop off their kids for some fun in a safe and controlled environment.

Entry to the league is free; only tournaments and championships are charged for.

HOW DOES A BATTLE WORK?

Part 1: Setting up

  • Start by shuffling your deck: Make sure your deck has 25 cards. One-fourth to one-third of the cards in your deck should be energy cards.

  • Draw 7 cards: Take 7 cards from the top of the deck and put them face down to the side.

  • Select your prize cards: Draw 6 more cards without looking at them and put them face down to the side.

  • Put the remainder of your deck to the side: Typically these should be on your right side, opposite to the prize cards. Remember to keep your discard pile, which will be next to the deck.

  • Find your basic Pokémon: Look for a basic Pokémon in your hand of 7 cards. If there aren't any, shuffle your hand into your deck and draw another 7 cards. Each time you do this, your opponent can draw an extra card.

  • Pick your active Pokémon: If you have at least one basic Pokémon in your hand, put the one you want to use for attack first face down onto the playing area a few inches in front of you. If you have more basic Pokémon cards in your hand, you can place them face down beneath your active Pokémon as your bench. You may have no more than 5 Pokémon on your bench at one time.

  • Draw your 6 prize cards: Place these cards in a pile on the side face-down, without looking at them. Each time you knock one of your opponent's Pokémon out, take a prize card. When you run out of prize cards, you win. Fewer prize cards can be used for a faster game.

  • Decide on who goes first: Flip a coin to see who starts. The first player cannot attack.

  • Face your cards in the right direction: When you are ready to begin, make sure your active and benched Pokémon cards are all turned face up. The rest of your hand, prizes, and the rest of your deck should all be face down. You can look at your hand, but not your deck or prize cards.

  • Play until someone win:. You win if you take all your prize cards, if your opponent has to draw but can't because they've run out of cards in their deck, or if you knock out all Pokémon on your opponent's field.
