Discover A Private Garden With A Cup Of Coffee + Plant Sales

Open Gardens Constantia is back in 2019, and this time they’re water-wise

Discover how incredible a green space can be given time, love and resources, and see some of the most unusual, interesting and beautiful plants during this event, which will take place in Constantia on 18-19 October.

WALK SOME OF CAPE TOWN’S LOVELIEST GREEN SPACES
This year a number of diverse, private gardens, selected by The Constantia Valley,  Constantiaberg and Flourish garden clubs, will be opened up to ticket-holding guests.

Homeowners will be showcasing their private gardens, where you’ll be able to see the result of their gardening skills in the from of bright, flowering plants and healthy, flourishing gardens. Various water-wise plants will be on sale too, such as Holly ferns and the South African Laburnum tree Calpurniav aurea.

WATER-WISE SELECTION
The three garden clubs running Open Gardens Constantia – Constantia Valley, Constantiaberg and Flourish – were specifically looking for water-wise gardens and plants this year, since they had to cancel 2018’s event due to the drought.

ABOUT THE GARDENS
Four gardens will be opened to the public. Garden A is a small, suburban garden with trees and only uses shower or roof water to water the garden. It’s predominantly indigenous with succulents and hanging plants. It also has a small water feature and organically grown vegetables. There’ll also be a plant sale taking place here.

Garden B is also a water-wise garden, and shady with green and grey leaved plants. These plants were chosen for their form and texture that stands out against the dark grey perimeter walls. It also boasts bright pops of colour from flowering shrubs and perennials.

You’ll find the tea and coffee at garden C, a lush, formal garden with a central foundation, gazebo, olive orchard, King Proteas, blue statice all among foxgloves and delphiniums.

The last garden is garden D, a large garden that has been terraced so that the water doesn’t run, but soaks into the soil. A beautiful layout of shrubs and predominantly fynbos – a Western Cape flora that has adapted to our dry summers. A raised walkway weaves through the lower garden. There’s also a young forest of indigenous trees, water features, an organic vegetable garden and a play area for the kids.

TICKETS TO OPEN GARDENS CONSTANTIA
You’ll need a ticket to view all the gardens. Tickets cost R70pp and can be purchased via WebTickets. Proceeds from the ticket and plant sales go to food-garden projects with proven track records and sustainable mission statements. This year’s beneficiaries are The SOZO Foundation and Soil for Life.

Tickets include coffee and homemade cake, which will be served in the gardens.
