Der Fliegende Holländer Docks in Cape Town for Four Nights Only

Matthew Wild’s new production, Wagner’s The Flying Dutchman, is all set to make waves this August!

Cape Town Opera is staging the pièce de résistance of their 2017 calendar: Wagner’s Der Fliegende Holländer (The Flying Dutchman). This gripping opera will take the stage for only four shows; Thursday, 17, Saturday, 19, Wednesday, 23 and Saturday, 26 August 2017. The brand new interpretation of one of Wagner’s masterpieces gives you a golden opportunity to experience the best that opera can offer.

Wagner was born in 1813, and to this day he is known for creating gesamtkunstwerk (translated as ‘total works of art’). His operas combine music, poetry, drama and visual elements to create a cohesive masterpiece. Wagner is also well-known for complex operas, some lasting over five hours. This performance of Der Fliegende Holländer is two and a half hours long, with a 20 minute interval in between.

Der Fliegende Holländer chronicles the story of a cursed captain and his ghost ship that sails to the Cape of Good Hope. The captain spoke Satan’s name and as punishment can only go ashore once every seven years. The story is categorised by its predominant themes of love, redemption, divinity and exploration.

Here are seven riveting reasons for you to spend a grand night at the opera with Der Fliegende Holländer at the Artscape Theatre:

SEVEN RIVETING REASONS TO SEE THE NEW PRODUCTION OF DER FLIEGENDE HOLLÄNDER AT THE ARTSCAPE THEATRE

WILDY GOOD DIRECTION - Internationally acclaimed director, Mattew Wild has done adaptations of The Rocky Horror Picture Show and West Side Story. He enjoys staging out-of-the-box theatre, so you can expect this opera to be like nothing you’ve seen before.

THE DUTCHMAN - The leading male, playing the role of the Dutchman, is none other than Jaco Venter. He is also locally born and his baritone voice promises to bring the gravitas of the Dutchman to life.

MUSIC FROM A MASTER - It really cannot be stressed enough how momentous a Wagner opera is. His musical scores take you on a journey through a complex story, and few can replicate his intricate melodies and moving creations. The opera chorus for this production is the award-winning Cape Town Opera Chorus. The group contains 54 members and the musical perfection they produce needs to be heard to be believed. The orchestral component of the show will be performed by our beloved Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra.

WELCOME HOME LEADING LADY! - Johanni van Oostrum will perform the lead female role of Senta. Her angelic soprano voice and impressive vocal range have gained her international acclaim. She has performed as a guest soloist at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, as well as at the Dutch National Opera in Amsterdam and the Bavarian State Opera in Munich.

21ST CENTURY SURPRISES - Michael Mitchell, set designer, and Kirsti Cumming, video designer, have been working tirelessly to ensure that the set and visual effects match the music’s standard. We aren’t letting the cat out of the bag, but there has never been a Wagner production like this one.

WE KNOW SHE CAN DANCE - The choreography for this production is being expertly handled by Celeste Botha. She is a big name in the world of dance and has even had the opportunity to choreograph an Andrew Lloyd Webber and Ben Elton production by the name of The Boys in the Photograph.

LOCALLY INSPIRED - This production of Der Fliegende Holländer is a celebration of all things local, and that even includes the story! There is no other internationally acclaimed opera that is based on the Cape of Good Hope! Don't miss the opportunity to see South African director and leading actors light up the stage.
