Cape Town Sevens Rugby Tournament
The South African leg of the World Sevens Rugby Tournament takes place in the Mother City
Sevens Rugby is a variation of the usual 15-a-side game and has grown in size and popularity over the past decade. Cape Town plays host to the World Sevens Cup Rugby Tournament on Saturday, 9 and Sunday, 10 December 2017 at the Cape Town Stadium.
The 2017/2018 tournament kicks off in Dubai on Friday, 1 and Saturday, 2 December 2017, after which it will touch down in South Africa for the Cape Town leg a week later. This year, 16 of the best international Sevens Rugby teams will compete in the tournament, such as our fellow African nations, Kenya and Zimbabwe. The global tournament is hosted in ten iconic locations, including Sydney, Las Vegas, Paris and London, and will end in June 2018.
In the past two years, South Africa has won the home tournaments, and finally, last year, they won the series in Paris!
The entire tournament is completed over two days because the matches only last around 14 minutes (seven minutes per half), instead of the normal 80 minute game. This is because the players are spread out so tries are scored on a more regular basis. The competition finals will have 10 minute halves, so the game is fast-paced and action packed – perfect for hyping up the crowd and keeping fans entertained and energetic.
Dedicated supporters often dress up in creative and crazy costumes that add to the excitement and buzz of the event. Get your thinking caps on and round up your mates because the bigger the group with matching outfits the better – there are loads of prizes up for grabs for the best dressed.
Bands will be performing throughout the day on the stage on the south stand, and there will be a kiddies’ play village on the north east corner of the stadium, so you can watch some intense rugga and know that your kids are safe too.
