Are you at a loss about how to spend your 67 minutes this Mandela Day? Why not do something different and spend the day building kennels for chilly pets at the Mdzananda Animal Clinic in Khayelitsha? Join the kind-hearted kennel crew on Saturday, 16 July and get ready to snuggle furry creatures and make a difference.
The Mdzananda Animal Clinic is the only permanent, veterinary council-registered animal clinic in the Khayelitsha area, which caters to the broader township region and treats up to 1 000 animals per month. It was founded in 1996 in response to the community’s need for affordable pet care – many Khayelitsha residents are loving animal owners who struggle to pay their best friends’ vet fees. Mdzananda Animal Clinic recognised this and provides consultations, sterilisations, surgery, hospitalisation, X-rays and mobile clinics to keep animals happy, and their humans well-educated and informed.
For the Mdzananda Animal Clinic, a community that loves animals is a healthy one. Respect for life, compassion and responsibility are key lessons that pet-owners learn, which reinforces the importance of animal ownership in disadvantaged areas. The clinic needs your help to keep its good work going, and one of the ways you can give back is by donating your time to building animal shelters. If you want to get involved you need to bring snacks, water, a hat, hammer, measuring tape, pencil and paint brush, along with varnish and paint if you have some at home. You also need to donate R67/167 to cover the cost of the kennels.
Corporate groups are invited to build on Monday, 18 July, while the public can get involved on Saturday, 16 July from 10am onwards. Whether you want to get your colleagues, friends or family involved, this is one event that’s sure to get your tails wagging.
