10 Artists’ personal journeys through music and a special reasons to rediscover Kirstenbosch at the 13th annual Cape Town Folk ‘n Acoustic Music Festival
The 13th annual Cape Town Folk ‘n Acoustic Music Festival is going to be a special one. Dedicated to the beloved Kirstenbosch curator (and pioneer of cycling lanes at the gardens) who passed tragically last December, it features an incredible line-up of SA folk and acoustic artists sharing their personal journeys through music.
And your ticket gives you access to Kirstenbosch Gardens – such an excellent reason to come rediscover its beauty. Here’s what to expect at the concert (part of Kirstenbosch’s Summer Sunset concerts series) on Sunday 17 February 2019.

Your concert ticket grants you access from 8am to appreciate the gardens. Explore the expansive gardens and learn about Cape biodiversity as you stroll along the Boomslang canopy or mingle with the dinosaurs in the cycad garden. Gates to the concert area open at 4pm so lay down your blanket and tuck into a picnic as the show gears up. The concert starts at 5pm and continues until 7pm.
IN MEMORY OF BELOVED GARDEN CURATOR
The concert is in memory of Philip Le Roux, the internationally-renowned curator of Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden. He was involved in an accident while cycling on 2 December 2018 at the Suikerbossie pass in Hout Bay. He later succumbed to his severe injuries and died in hospital.
Le Roux gave the thumbs up to cut a cycling trail through parts of the 528-hectare gardens so that cyclists could enjoy the scenery. Fellow cyclist friend Etienne van Cuyck said that Le Roux enjoyed attending outdoor concerts and would write down the name of a good band that was playing, look them up, and try to get them to perform at the gardens.
He spent eight years studying horticulture, parks and forestry, and became curator at Kirstenbosch in 1987. His legacy lives on in all that he built at Kirstenbosch in the 30 years that he served the garden.
