Sunsets And Fairy Lights At This Beachside Eatery

Make a toast to a beautiful day in Hermanus right on the beach

Arrive straight from the beach, with sandy feet and salty hair, for a meal and a drink at the casual, beachside restaurant, Dutchies. Situated a stone’s throw from the Blue Flag Grotto Beach in Hermanus, Dutchies offers views of the ocean, the beach, and the Olifantsberg. All the more reason to toast a beautiful day in Hermanus with mojitos or daiquiris as the sun goes down.

On a clear day, sit beneath umbrellas in the dog-friendly open-air garden courtyard. The seating surrounds a 100-year-old giant Milkwood tree, which lights up with fairy lights as night falls. Sit on the front stoep for beach, ocean, mountain and sunset views, surrounded by glittering lights. If there’s a breeze, you can sit indoors and still have a view through the clear window blinds. The fireplace keeps things cosy in the casual beach-chic inside section in winter. Parents will appreciate the kid’s menu and colouring books at Dutchies.

Grotto Beach is a wide 18km-long stretch of fine white sand which achieved Blue Flag status; an award that acknowledges safety, ecological value, beauty, and accessibility. Just a 10-minute drive from central Hermanus, the beach is safe for swimming, surfing, and other watersports, with lifeguards on duty through the summer season. The beach is ideal for walking your dog (on a leash), playing beach games, soaking up the sun, and building sandcastles.

Hermanus is known as the best land-based whale watching destination in the world when the whales visit between July and December every year. From the beach, you may be able to spot southern right whales as they play and breach in the waters of the bay.

Dutchies belongs to Joke and Daan Gonggrijp from the Netherlands, who wanted to share the beauty that this beachside spot has to offer. Daan, Joke’s son, became gravely ill while they were still living in Holland. His mother promised him that if he survived, he could follow his dreams and they would support him however they can.

Daan made it, and was later invited to Hermanus to work at a small fish and chips shop for six weeks. When he learnt that the owners wanted to sell, he told Joke that this was his dream. In 2012, the family packed their things and moved to Hermanus to buy the shop and turn it into Dutchies. With a lot of passion, some great ideas, and a whole lot of hard work, they made Dutchies what it is today.

From the breakfast menu, choose from a fry-up, omelettes, health breakfasts, croissants, the popular eggs benedict or pancakes. For something different, try the uitsmijter (a Dutch dish of bread, ham, eggs and cheese), or the wentelteefjes (French toast with apple). The main menu offers a selection of sandwiches, light meals, salads and mains. Don’t miss the Dutch speciality of bitterballen (deep-fried meatballs with mustard) or the fresh hake and chips.

Sushi or tapas go hand-in-hand with the beach location, and the exclusive vegetarian menu offers starters and mains such as broccoli and cauliflower soup and mushroom risotto. End off with home-baked apple pie or try a deconstructed stroopwafel for something totally unique.
