Vegan bar that breaks all stereotypes

Burgers, loaded boerie rolls and creamy soft serve – all plant-based

Last updated: Tuesday, 12 July 2022

“WTF, it’s a plant?” That’s what you’ll say after biting into a juicy, loaded boerie roll or slurping up a creamy soft serve at this vegan bar on Loop Street. WTF Plant? is pushing the boundaries of plant-based eating. This new spot evolved from a small pop-up at the Mojo Market, and owners Charles Tapanlis and Gavin Hagger (founder of Jerry's) describes it as a “café and brasserie by day, grill, bar, boogie (and occasional bedlam) at night”.

YOU’LL BE SEDUCED BY THESE MEAT ALTERNATIVES

WTF Plant? Offers a  menu that was “created for meat (and dairy) lovers, from plants”, says Charles and Gavin. You’ll find hearty meals that you’d expect to see at any bar –  except it’s all vegan and better for the enviroment.

Swap and share a starter of Cherry Maple Bourbon Chick’n Kebabs or keftedes (greek-style meatballs with tzatziki dip). Finish off with a thick, salted-caramel shake and a danish. All meat and cheese alternatives are supplied from Urban Vegan, a plant-based company in Hout Bay.

VIEW THE BUSY STREET THROUGH THE BAY WINDOWS

The brightly lit, neon-yellow and blue sign above the doorway creates a bold, inviting entrance that can be seen from down the street. The interior is just as welcoming, with greenery cascading from ceiling to floor behind the bar and dark, cladding of wooden panels on the walls. There are heaters above the tables to keep the space cosy. On warmer days you can sit outside at the window bar, taking in the hustle and bustle of Loop Street.

PARTY ON FIRST THURSDAYS

Party all night on First Thursdays with live DJs, from 6pm to 2am (the lights stay on even during load shedding). Or make it your new after-work drinks spot. You can pop down on a lunch break for “fake mocktails”, as Charles likes to call them. Or try a fiery ginger shot that will get you heated and ready to boogie. On Sundays its open for a boozy (or not so boozy) brunch, with mimosas and freshly pressed juices, until 3pm..

The cocktail menu offers all the classics - Moscow Mule is a favourite. Image: Sarah Jarvis
