WATCH: CYRIL RAMAPHOSA’S LATEST ADDRESS

President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the nation the night of 30 May, to announce South Africa's move up to alert level 2 due to a sharp increase in daily infections. It’s only a matter of time before the country enters its third wave, Ramaphosa said.

To slow the current trajectory South Africa moved into the new restrictions as of Monday, 31 May. This means a new curfew time (11pm - 4pm) and restrictions (see below).

While lockdown restrictions are strengthened, vaccinations of those over 60 are continuing. Over 960 000 people have received one vaccine dose Ramaphosa said in his state of the nation address.

LOCKDOWN LEVEL 2: RESTRICTIONS

  • Curfew hours are from 11pm until 4am.

  • Non-essential establishments such as bars, restaurants and fitness centres will need to close by 10pm to allow their staff and guests to travel home before curfew.

  • Gatherings may not exceed 100 people for indoor venues and 250 for outdoor venues. If the venue is too small to accommodate more than 50 people, the venue may not exceed more than 50% of its capacity.

  • Religious, social, political and cultural gatherings are permitted, subject to health protocols.

  • Funerals are restricted to 100 people.

  • Night vigils or other gatherings happening before or after funerals are not permitted.

  • Wearing a mask is compulsory when in public spaces. Not wearing a mask in public could get you a fine or in jail.

  • The sale of alcohol may be sold according to normal license provisions, but no alcohol may be sold during curfew.

  • On-site consumption of alcohol from shebeens, restaurants and bars is allowed until 10pm. No alcohol may be sold during curfew.

  • Public spaces such as beaches, parks and dams will stay open.

  • Night clubs will remain closed.

PHASE TWO IS GOING WELL – RAMAPHOSA

In the past week South Africa has seen an average of 3 745 daily new infections. This surge of infections suggests that it’s only a matter of time before South Africa enters its third wave. We need to “ensure that health facilities are not overwhelmed and that lives that could be saved are not lost”, Ramaphosa said in his address.

Luckily, the “registration and vaccination of those over 60 years is going well”, the president said, adding “there are now more than 400 vaccination sites in operation across the country in both the public and private sectors”.

Over 3 million people have registered via the Electronic Vaccine Data System. With more shipments of the Johnson & Johnson as well as the Pfizer vaccines there will be enough to vaccinate all adults in the country, says Ramaphosa. Here’s how to register for the vaccine:

  • You will need internet access on a smartphone, tablet or computer

  • If you are 60+ you can apply to register online via vaccine.enroll.health.gov.za

  • You can use your South African ID number, passport number or refugee number

  • Once you have registered you will receive an SMS directing you to the nearest vaccination site to your place of residence
