Your favourite First Thursdays galleries are opening back up

It's not quite the First Thursdays we know and love, but many galleries are ready to welcome you

Last updated: 13 July 2020

Please note that new lockdown regulations prevent the sale of alcohol. Some of these options may no longer be possible.

Many galleries are hanging new exhibitions, some are open as usual, and some are open by appointment. Experience a virtual exhibition at the Eclectic Contemporary Gallery or find solace in Abe Opperman’s We Are Not Alone exhibition. Top it all off with a glass of wine from Leo’s Wine Bar.

WE'RE ALL IN LOCKDOWN TOGETHER
The Abe Opperman Gallery is showcasing their brand new winter exhibition entitled We Are Not Alone both online and in their gallery in De Waterkant. If you take a closer look at all the art, you'll notice that the gallery only sells pieces from the owner, Abe Opperman. Plus, with not a copy or print in sight gallery curator, Ben Theron says that “all the pieces are unique”.
When: Monday to Friday, 10am-6pm and Saturday, 9am-1pm.

TURNING UP THE VOLUME FOR PEOPLE OF COLOUR
If a virtual art exhibition based entirely on challenging stereotypes and reimaging identity sounds like something up your alley, you should check out Eclectica Contemporary’s exhibit Kwaai Vol 3. Gallery curator Clare Patrick says that the exhibit aims to “explore colourness by turning up the volume of voices of POC’s in the creative industry”.

Visit Eclectica’s website for intricate and thought-provoking pieces like Kelly Johnson’s photo collages or photographer Jabu Newman’s intimate family portraits.
When: Monday to Friday, 9:30am-5pm and Saturday, 10am-1:30pm

COFFEE, MUFFINS AND EXQUISITE LOCAL ART
The Ladder on 136 is a working café and art studio run by practising artists Nicholas and Anastasia. For the whole of July, they’re showcasing a group exhibition entitled, Artists in Isolation. Pop in to view a selection of works created during this lockdown period and grab a coffee and a muffin to go.
When: Monday to Friday, 7:30am-4pm and Saturday, 8:30am-1pm throughout July

IT’S A TINY BAR INSIDE A BAGEL SHOP
Licensed bars and restaurants are now allowed to sell alcohol, which means you can stock up on some premium wines to enjoy after your meander through the galleries. Leo's Wine Bar stocks a host of wines, which you can order by the case. Dive headfirst into a mixed case of South Africa's best wines, or share a case of the top six wines from Leo's wine list.
When: Wednesday to Saturday 5pm-11pm

NEW FICTION, NON-FICTION, LOCAL FICTION OR PAPERBACK
The Book Lounge is a Cape Town treasure which sits right on the corner of Roeland and Buitenkant streets. Drop in to catch up on all of their new and noteworthy books. Plus, you can find out what the passionate Book Lounge staff are reading for themselves.
When: Monday to Sunday, 10am-4pm

FROM AN 18 CENTURY CAPE GEORGIAN HOUSE TO A GALLERY
Chandler House is more than a gallery showcasing stunning local work. It's also a beautiful 18th century Cape Georgian house. “Since its inception 10 years ago,” notes owner Michael Chandler, “the gallery has exhibited over 2000 individual art pieces”.

This July, Chandler House is featuring a solo exhibition of Chloe Townsend’s work. You can view her bold and colourful pieces online or at the Voorkamer Gallery in the CBD.
When: July, Monday to Friday, 10am-5pm and Saturday, 10am-2pm.

A CRISPY GRILLED CHEESE SANDWICH AND COCKTAILS
Clarke’s Bar and Dining room is open and accepting orders for collection. Try their crispy grilled cheese sandwich, vegetarian sloppy joe, or famous burgers. They’re also selling beer and wine to go, and cocktail packs you can take home and make for yourself.
When: Monday to Saturday, 8am-7pm

NOT ONE BUT TWO EXHIBITIONS
As a relatively new kid on the block, the Nel Gallery is diving headfirst into the First Thursdays action with not one but two exhibitions. For June, gallery owner, Luan Nel is holding a solo exhibition for the late Mary Holland entitled, The Last Landscape. Although the art is not for sale, her gorgeous sceneries are just what we need in lockdown.

For their next First Thursdays in July, Nel is showcasing drawings by the artist Hentie Van Der Merwe. According to Nel,  "The exhibition spoke to current queer sexual practice and the 'online' entering the Queer landscape for the first time in an almost revolutionary way. It changed gay social life forever".
When: June and July, Tuesday to Friday, 10am-5pm and Saturday, 10am-2pm

*A previous version of this article mentioned that First Thursdays was back. We apologise for the misleading statement. However, you can still celebrate the spirit of First Thursdays by visiting some of the many galleries that are reopening. We hope that you support them while observing safety measures including social distancing.
