7 Things to do this week(end)

What does a weekend under level 3 look like?

This week we have lots of local art to appreciate and contemplate over (because the Western Cape is blessed with so much creativity), an incredible nature hike to a secret pool, and a stay in a stunning hotel stay-cation.

TAP INTO ITALIAN ROMANCE AT CASA LABIA

The shush of the waves, big green lawn, and authentic Italian aesthetic and rich heritage makes the Casa Labia, in Muizenberg, the ultimate dreamy romantic escape. Originally home to Count and Countess Natale Labia, the Casa Labia, which was restored by the family and opened to the public in 2010, is now also offering two suites of luxury accommodation. You can now stay there for a stay-cation (or work-ation) and get quick access to the beach and nearby cafés and restaurants. Its own restaurant offers exceptional food. Plus you can also now work remotely at the Casa Labia.

Date: 8am-10pm daily

HIKE TO A SECRET WATERFALL

Hike to a waterfall – it's a 40-metre sheer drop and is spectacular. Afterwards you can take a refreshing dip in an icy rockpool surrounded by ferns and lush moss. The hike starts off quite easily, but it does get more challenging, with numerous rock formations that hikers have to scramble over. There is also a Hiddingh Ascension hike on Sunday, 10 January (check the Facebook page for more information). All you’ll need to bring is hiking shoes, a bottle of water and sunscreen to hike along with Trail Fit SA

Date: Saturday, 30 January

EXPLORE AFRICAN ART AND CULTURE

Buff up on African history, from oral storytelling and protest music through to an evocative story about a family who were evicted from their home during apartheid. This Bo-Kaap family's experience is told through a photographic exhibition in the building that used to be their home. Go further back and learn about artefacts and fossils. All of these exhibitions are on at one of the collection of Iziko Museums. There are strict Covid-19 policies to ensure your safety when you visit the Iziko Museums.

Date: See article, as times are dependent on which of the museums you visit.

CALLING ALL LOCAL AESTHETES TO RIEBEEK KASTEEL

Visit one of South Africa’s oldest towns, Riebeek Kasteel, a town filled with art, culture and good food. Exhibitions at the Gallery Riebeek Kasteel showcase a variety of work of artists in the area, and it's worth the trip for both serious collectors as well as appreciators of fine art. The current summer exhibition is on until 31 January and is called No Holds Barred.

Date: 6 December - 31 January 2021

FIND OUT WHO THE RUPERT MUSEUM IS SHOWING

Up until 28 February, 2021, you can see the work of legendary South African artist Sam Nhlengethwa. This is a collection of his colourful figurative and collage works, but art lovers can also get an intimate look into his love for his family and jazz. Break your date with Nhlengethwa’s The Still from Life exhibition with a coffee and toastie at the café when you visit the Rupert Museum

Date: Tuesday to Friday, 10am - 5pm & Saturday to Sunday, 10am - 4pm

SEE STRANGE LIFE AT THE TWO OCEANS AQUARIUM

Lazy sharks, floating giant turtles, giant crabs straight out of a science fiction novel and a fish that has no eyes, no mouth and no fins are just a few of the 8 000 weird and wonderful sea creatures at South Africa’s most famous aquarium. Over the festive season, the gates are also open for a little longer at the Two Oceans Aquarium

Date: Daily, 9:30am - 6pm; weekends, 9am - 6pm

TEST OUT UNIQUE FLAVOURS AT MAKERS LANDING

In December 2020 a brand new district of the V&A Waterfront opened for young local foodie talent. Makers Landing is a food community, where the brightest minds in food can hone their skills. Plus it will be home to a market where you can sample the freshest flavours in the country. If you’re planning your summer holidays, don’t miss  Makers Landing.

Date: Monday to Sunday, 9am - 7pm
