Romantic Cape Town Winter Date Ideas for Every Love Language
Speak the lingo your lover knows best with these wintery date plans.
Last updated: 19 May 2017
There’s something about winter that’s inherently romantic. As the sky darkens, painted with moody grey clouds, and the wind chases you indoors, snuggling up under a comforting duvet with that special someone is practically a must. However, try to resist the natural inclination to hibernate this season and instead celebrate the amorous feeling in the air by taking the time to show your person just how much they mean to you.
Our guide for winter date night ideas in Cape Town has a different date for every love language - everyone has a particular one they understand. Use it to plan something perfectly suited to your sweetheart – impress their pants off and let the cuddling commence.
WORDS OF AFFIRMATION
A Cape date for your word nerd
If you’re dating a lover of words then affirm their affection with this Shakespearean show of sentiment.
Start by hiding extracts from your sweetie’s favourite love poems around the house. If there are particular authors you know your beloved has a fondness for then use these. Let the notes culminate in an invitation to dinner, with a passionate quote accompanied by a time, address and single white rose (not red, that’s cliché.). Pick a romantic restaurant off our list of top spots for lovebirds around the Mother City, or go all out and book a table at the beautiful Kloof Street House Restaurant. Ask for a table with a view, and arrive before your beloved to adorn it with white roses and a note with your own short and sweet love letter written on it. When your partner arrives, gaze into their eyes, read the letter to them and bathe in the knowledge that you’ve just bought yourself at least a billion brownie points. We’re just saying that it’s probably also the perfect moment to pop that question.
Declare your love
Sometimes words say it best - remind your lover of why they rock your world.
Luckily for Capetonians winter doesn’t always equal cold, grey, wet days. The sun can shine and bring surprisingly warm weather along with it once in awhile. Take this chance to get outside with your beloved for a romantic picnic in one of the Mother City’s spots of natural beauty. Bring some tasty goodies, plenty of blankets and a bottle of bubbly, and present your love with a card filled with the reasons you adore them. This is your chance to sit with them and wreathe them in compliments, words of encouragement and other things they deserve to hear.
Play Cupid with this cuddly Cape Town date idea
If you’re dating a hugger with a fondness for physical affection then spoil them with this touching display of ardour.
Book them a surprise spa day at the luxurious Turkish Life Day Spa in Century City. For R350p/p, you can get the pampering of your life in their Rasul Chamber, where you are treated to an exfoliating and cleansing ritual, as it is referred to as. The 30-minute ceremony involves an exfoliating medicinal earth mud that (and here’s the best part) you and your partner rub all over yourselves and each other, with a tropical shower at the end leaving you clean, soft-skinned and refreshed. Your partner will feel relaxed and loved, and you’re sure to get plenty of loving in return. If you want to choose a package specially tailored to couples, check out what's on offer at the Life Day Spa from R990 - the pair that spas together, stays together.
Couple together with some steamy Latin dancing classes
Hold your physical touch partner close and sweep them off their feet.
Latin-inspired dancing lessons are popular for a reason; these sexy dances are the perfect opportunity to show off your rhythm and moves in front of your lover, incorporate some light embracing and release endorphins together - nothing like some fun to add a touch of romance to your evening! So take your person along to a Salsa and Tango class in Cape Town and show them a good time.
A Mother City treasure hunt for your gift-loving gal or guy
This idea involves a gift treasure hunt of sorts that leads your significant other around the Mother City.
Start by phoning Charly’s Bakery and ordering two special cupcakes with your person’s name and a sugary message like “I love you” in icing. Ask the bakers to enclose a clue to the next location in the box that the cupcakes come in. This clue should take your giddy gift-hunter to the Book Lounge, which you should phone ahead to ask to place a book by your partner’s favourite author aside, with a note inside it with the second clue. Clue number two will lead to Truth Coffee with its fabulous steampunk coffee machine and sweet treats. Grab your girl/guy some coffee and hand them the final hint. The last clue will lead to the famous Adderley flower market which boasts a selection of fresh, beauteous blooms. End the hunt by spoiling your person with a bunch of their favourite flowers and then they’ve got everything they need for the perfect rainy day.
Surprise them with a treat during the day
Whether you get a treat delivered to them or bring it to them yourself, receiving a surprise (or several) during a dull workday will likely make your boo’s week! You can go all-out cheesy and send them balloons, chocolates and a teddy bear, keep it classic with flowers, or send them something to nibble on to raise their energy levels in the office. Along with these, you can add a note with an invite to lunch or coffee later that day.
Take them out for a short work break for a cuppa the way they like it from a quality spot like Truth Coffee in Green Point or if they have a sweet tooth, a devilishly tasty morsel from somewhere like the heavenly Olympia Bakery in Kalk Bay. Even better, take them for an unexpected outing during their lunch and treat them to a meal. The cosy and relaxed Caffe Verdi in Wynberg is a great option for a quick bite to eat.
ACTS OF SERVICE
A Cape Town cooking class for your service-loving sweetie
If your partner is the kind of person that will spontaneously make you coffee, do the dishes or cook you a delicious dinner then it’s time for a role reversal. Step up to the plate, take part in a culinary class and impress them with a home-cooked dinner. Better yet, take your lover along so you can have fun cooking together.
Cape Town has many different cooking classes on offer, from Cape Malay cuisine to top tips for cake decorating. If you want to do something special then book a One Ingredient dinner and cooking class with Matt Manning.
Do your honey a favour and plan a surprise weekend away
A lover who appreciates and gives help and service will be blown away should you surprise them with a short overnight getaway for the two of you, completely organised by you; no gesture could be more meaningful or demonstrate more proactivity on your part, which is sure to impress them. This is a little more pricey and large-scale than your average date, but there are just too many intimate, romance-rousing spots to stay at in and around Cape Town to ignore!
You don’t have to go far to feel you’ve had an escape from the norm by the end of the weekend. If you and your sweetheart are in need of some luxury and extra looking after (more service points!), the boutique Cape Cadogan Hotel in Gardens has wonderful en-suite bedrooms, some with four-poster beds, and is sure to provide you with some needed pampering. If you’re keen to get right out of town and into nature, head to the unique Kagga Kamma Nature Reserve in Cederberg where you can choose between plenty of activities, from cycling to a spa treatment, and experience sleeping under the stars or in a sumptuous cave room.
Bonding with your bae in the Cape Winelands
One way to spend some good old-fashioned quality time with each other is to go on a short road trip to the Cape Winelands. Make a sentimental playlist of all your favourite songs, grab your sunnies and set off for a day of winter wine tasting. If you can find an intimate table at an ambient vineyard restaurant with a cosy, crackling fireplace then you’re venturing into legendary date territory – the kind of experience your companion will be talking about for years to come. Dornier Bodega Restaurant is housed in a gorgeous 18th century Cape Dutch barn on the Dornier vineyard estate and the historic exterior is tastefully contrasted by a more contemporary interior. If you choose to do a wine tasting, you get to sample six wines from their delicious selection; alternatively (or additionally!) you can sign up for a tour through their lovely cellar.
Hang out and snuggle up together at the movie theatre
Spending time together doesn’t have to involve constant conversation and active pursuits - you’ll be speaking your loved one’s language without having to say anything all by going to a film they’ve been dying to see, along with them. It’s the perfect opportunity to touch hands over your popcorn and cuddle in your seats as you both watch the screen - if you can tear your eyes away from one another.
The Labia Theatre in Gardens is a particularly special cinematic experience, with small vintage-style theatres showing independent, lesser-known movies along with mainstream flicks and a quaint ambience. They even sell alcohol there which you can take in with you to the screening!
Ultimately, The Beatles said it the best: “In the end, the love you take, is equal to the love you make”. The more you give, the more you receive and knowing your partner’s love language and showing them affection in the way they best understand is the greatest way to make them happy and deepen your relationship. Couch cuddles are grand but go out of your way this winter to dream up a date that will be the umbrella sheltering you from those relationship rainclouds.
