New Place: How to Get Into the Exclusive Founders' Lounge With The Award-Winning Andrew Copsey
What’s behind the secret door on Loop?
You might have noticed the stairs with the secret door and a “members only” sign at 113 Loop Street. You may have heard rumours about an exclusive place where founders, freethinkers and creative entrepreneurs come to relax or brainstorm the next big idea over a game of poker and world-class cocktails.
And you might have heard right. Located on the mezzanine area of bespoke co-working space Cartel House, the Founders' Lounge is a 24-hour space where it’s about who you know. Here’s what’s behind the door and how to get in.
Previously a boutique tailor, the Founders' Lounge kept the original wardrobe cabinets and modified them into a bar space, maintaining Cartel House’s old-meets-new aesthetic. With comfortable armchairs and sofas, the Founders' Lounge is perfect for meetings and work chats during the day and drinks and conversations later on.
With internationally recognised mixologist Andrew Copsey at the helm, the Founders' Lounge opens on 28 March 2019 from 4pm for the public to come try his inventions.
MASTER OF MIXOLOGY
Hailing from London, internationally recognised mixologist and bar consultant, Andrew Copsey has won numerous global cocktail competitions for brands such as Patron Tequila, Grey Goose, Bombay Sapphire, Remy Martin and Woodford Reserve, as well as a few industry awards.
And, after spending the last eight years travelling the world – from London’s The Playboy Club to luxury yachts and private jets in the Carribean – running bars in resorts and restaurants from Europe to New York, he fell in love with Cape Town. And now he’ll spend his days creating artisan-made cordials and infusions, marrying cutting-edge techniques with incredible flavours at the Founders' Lounge.
EVERY DRINK IS PRICED THE SAME
Here’s something unique: All drinks at the Founders' Lounge cost R75 – whether it’s a glass of truly exceptional wine, a life-changing cocktail or a large craft beer. A rotating option of bar snacks is also available at R75. The Bandito cocktail will change your life with chili-infused tequila, pink grapefruit shrub, lime, smoked ginger, agave and soda, or be a local with the Cartel House Punch (house rum blend, maple bourbon, peach, orange, mint, Assam tea, spices).
You can use the beautiful custom-made table for coffee and contracts during the day, and cocktails and cards in the evening. The table sits eight players, and you can book it for light-hearted games.
HOW TO GET INTO THE FOUNDERS' LOUNGE
“It’s a space for founders, funders and freethinkers with a creative and entrepreneurial mindset,” says Schuyler Vorster, founder of Cartel House and Cape Town co-working group Inner City | Ideas Cartel. Although it’s for Cartel House members only, you can gain access to the Founders' Lounge on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays – if you’re accompanied by a member or if you're not a member, you can book online.
Apparently, we can expect a lot more exciting additions in the next few months – more bars, restaurants, hotel rooms and pools. So you might even want to consider looking into getting Founders' Lounge access with a full Cartel House membership.
