Craft, Culinary, Culture – Coming Your Way in September

September sees Cape Town transform into a hub of artsy, cultural and outdoor activities perfect for welcoming the month of spring

We’ve taken some time to handpick a list of must-do events in and around the Mother City this September. There’s a street food fest with 37 different food styles, a cultural workshop in Clanwilliam where students will show off their skills and a rock festival with a cause. So whether you’re a festival-goer or consider yourself more of a bookworm, there is something for everyone.

EVER WANTED TO LEARN TO WALK ON STILTS
For five days in September 2018 (10–15), Clanwilliam is the location for community arts training for the Clanwilliam Arts Project. Student facilitators from UCT, Michaelis School of the Arts and the UCT Music School and other independent practitioners host drama, dance and art workshops. You can learn to drum, walk on stilts, and even how to make a lantern. There’ll also be programmes on archaeology, education, art and drama.
Price: This is a community project so entrance is free.

R50 GETS YOU INTO A FOOD FEST WITH TALKS
Mexican, Thai, Africa, Indian, Greek, Italian – that’s just six of the 37 food styles of food vendors that will be at the city's street food festival. It’s going to be a celebration of South African street food, including food walks, movie screenings and talks by foodie entrepreneurs. Book the dates, Saturday 1 to Sunday 9 September, to ensure you don't miss the popular Cape Town Street Food Festival.
Price: R50/p for day passes and R80/p for a weekend pass. Tickets for the Cape Town Food Walks are R450/p. They can be bought via www.streetfoodfestival.co.za.

ROCK N ROLL WITH A GOAL
On 4 September at the Zip Zap Circus Dome, 11 South African rock legends will join forces to bring you a music show with one common goal – to rock ’n roll against cancer. Francois van Coke of Fokofpolisiekar and Hanu De Jong are just two of the local musicians who will take the stage at the fourth annual Blood Brothers. Funds go towards the Vrede Foundation, which aims to educate young South Africans about cancer. Grab your tickets and enjoy a night of rocking good music for a very worthy cause.
Price: Tickets are R180/p and can be bought at www.plankton.mobi.

KICK OFF SEPTEMBER WITH A BANG
Start spring the right way with one of the city’s hottest techno music festivals. Spilt Milk will go down at the Greenpoint Cricket Club on 1 September. Look forward to much-loved local artists such as Ryan Sullivan and Dave Irish. They will also be debuting their new bespoke techno dome. The dome’s state-of-the-art lighting and effects and sound system will take your festival experience to a new level.
Price: Tickets are R330/p and are available via http://www.spiltmilktechno.com.

100 WRITERS AND THINKERS IN 5 DAYS
This five-day literary festival hosted at the Fugard Theatre, District 6 Museum and much-loved indie bookshop, The Book Lounge, celebrates local rock star writers and draws in international authors. More than 100 local and international wordsmiths come to present their latest work, talk about the craft, do readings, present workshops and engage in panel discussions on everything from writing to politics. It all happens 5–9 September at The Open Book Festival.
Price: Tickets to individual events range from free to R100/p.

A SPRING FEST IN THE OVERBERG
Visit the beautiful Overberg for the Bot River Spring Weekend (Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 September). This is a family-friendly festival of good food, wine and loads of fun activities. All 11 wine farms in the area will be open to guests. Expect Michelin-star feasts, an adult scavenger hunt and yoga in the vineyards. Naturally, there will be wine and lots of it!
Price: Single day passes are R100/p and weekend passes are R150/p. Tickets are available via www.quicket.co.za.
Certain events like the Magnum Tasting and Dinner (R450/p) are priced separately and will need to be pre-booked online.
