From music festivals to whale watching in Hermanus, we have everything you need to get up to this July

 

July is here, it’s that time of the year when the kids are looking for school holiday activities and other cool things to do during this time. In Cape Town, we also hold Christmas in July festivities to find the mid-year Christmas cheer and experience a cold Christmas. Check out our list of events to attend this July, from whale watching season in Hermanus to things to do on Mandela Day.

GET A DOSE OF CULTURE AT ANNUAL ART FESTIVAL IN PLETT
Get two weeks of culture, food, music and wine at the annual art festival in Plettenberg Bay. From music and pop-up art exhibitions to street performances and street food, there’s plenty to keep you entertained. The main road in this small town will be overflowing with creative energy as unique cultural and art events take place throughout the annual Plett ARTS festival
Cost: from R100/p–R950/p

SPEND YOUR DAY WHALE WATCHING IN WALKER BAY
Whale season begins in June and continues until the end of November. Watch these majestic creatures frolic in the coves of Walker Bay, throughout whale season. The town has art galleries, restaurants and craft markets to enjoy. It makes for an easy day trip or an ideal weekend getaway, check out our weekend getaway overview, accommodation specials as well as the whale, wine and wors tours for ideas on what to do during the Whale Season in Hermanus.

FIND YOUR LIGHT AT THIS WINTER WONDERLAND FESTIVAL
Gordon’s Bay transforms into a city of lights during the annual Winter Wonderland festival. Friday 29 June 2018 marks the beginning of this festival, which ends on Sunday 8 July 2018. This year it runs over two weekends, giving you ample time to indulge in the fiesta. From street parades and rides to wine tastings, closing off with beer and food stalls. There will be light all around as the whole town will be lit up by the more than 24 000 LED lights that will be strung from historic buildings and trees. Don’t miss the pleasure of experiencing your own Winter Wonderland Festival.

Cost: R20/p is the entrance fee to the festival and the rides cost between R10–R50.

 

CLASSICAL SOUNDS AT THE STELLENBOSCH CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL
Billed as the largest of its kind on the continent, this international chamber music festival returns from Friday 6 July to Sunday 15 July 2018 at Stellenbosch University for another round of orchestral music, public master classes and student mentoring. Over the course of 10 days, there will be daily student and faculty concerts culminating in performances by the event’s Festival Concert and Symphony Orchestras. What’s more, local and international students will be given the opportunity to receive coaching, attend lectures and perform in front of large audiences at the Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival.
Cost: Tickets for the evening and orchestral concerts are available at Computicket.com and cost between R100/p and R140/p.

 

SEAFOOD HEAVEN AT THE PICK N PAY KNYSNA OYSTER FESTIVAL
The 2018 Pick n Pay Knysna Oyster Festival invites seafood lovers to tuck into ocean-fresh fare from Friday 29 June to Sunday 8 July 2018. Hosted in the pretty Garden Route town of Knysna, the food and wine fiesta is not just centered on mollusc-munching and champagne-drinking; rather, the family-friendly celebration also offers competitive sporting activities and fun entertainment for all ages. The Garden Route has so much more to offer, including a close encounter with an orphan elephant.

Cost: Access is free. However, certain activities and events require an entry or booking fee and will have to be paid for separately. Visit www.oysterfestival.co.za for more information.

 

CELEBRATE FRANCE’S INDEPENDENCE DAY AT FRANSCHHOEK
Once again, the wineland town of Franschhoek will celebrate Bastille Day – France’s Independence Day. The town will be decked out in red, white and blue on Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 July 2018. The much-anticipated fête celebrates its 25th celebration in this town this year and features a feast of good food and great wine and a host of beguiling entertainment. Apart from the decadent fare and top-class vinos, the festival also includes a number of fun games, like the boules competition, the barrel-rolling contest, and a quirky caricature artist to capture your finest French moments. Cost: Tickets are available via Webtickets.co.za at R350/p on Saturday and R280/p on Sunday. Children under 18 years of age enter free.
