10 Questions For: Bevan Frank

Born and raised in Cape Town, Bevan Frank’s debut novel, ‘The Mind of God’ is primarily set in the Mother City to encourage readers to visit the beautiful city he grew up in. Despite currently residing in London, Bevan states he is still an avid Stormers rugby supporter and set his new novel in Cape Town to expose the world to its beauty and splendour.

1.  How would you describe what you do for a living?
I’m a writer, editor and author. I currently work in corporate communications.

2.  What is your most vivid childhood memory?
Being crowned “Mr Beacon Island” at a junior talent contest at the Beacon Island Hotel in Plettenberg Bay. I would go there for wonderful regular holidays with my parents and sister.

3.  If you could invite any three people, dead or alive, for dinner, who would they be and why?
Only three? It goes without saying that I would definitely invite Nelson Mandela. I was part of the jubilant crowd on the Grand Parade listening to him soon after he was released from prison and I sat in parliament listening to him when the Bill of Rights was ratified, I unfortunately, however, never had the honour and privilege of actually meeting him in person. I would also ask Richard Branson because for me he symbolises that if you believe in yourself and follow your passion, you can achieve anything. Enid Blyton would be on my list as well. She was the author whose  many exciting books I read as a child, inspiring me to be creative and write stories.

4. If you ever found yourself auditioning for a music reality TV show, what song would you sing and why?
’My Wish’ by Rascal Flatts. Great song, excellent lyrics and highly motivational.

5.  How would you complete this sentence?
The South African cabinet should include a Minister of _____________________________.
Ice cream, because everyone needs a bit of that in their lives!

6.  What would you say is the biggest misconception about you?
That my name is Frank!

7.  What is your (honest) opinion of Cape Town?
I have travelled to many places in the world and can honestly say that Cape Town remains the most beautiful place on Earth.

8.  What's the greatest fear you've had to overcome to get where you are today?
Fear of change. Writer’s block.

9.   What's the one thing you'd like to achieve before you die?
I would like to make a cameo appearance in the movie of my book.

10.  Which well-known South African personality would you, without a doubt, be able to beat in a street fight and why?
I confess I’m not much of a street fighter! Anyone for Scrabble?
