Scuba diving in the waters around Cape Town is a fabulous experience, one you as an experienced diver or diver to be should not miss.
Take for instance the area around Cape of Good Hope. Here the waters are rich in sea life with many animal and fish species, kelp forests and many species of soft coral.
Here you will see Cape Fur Seals, and do not be surprised when a pod of dolphins swims a long and stops to greet you for a while. In season, you might see a whale from the distance.

Two currents determine the temperature of the ocean around Cape Town: The Benguela current from the Antarctic and Atlantic Ocean and the warm Agulhas from the Indian Ocean.
These differences in temperature result in a very rich and diverse underwater world: Kelp forests, bright orange Elephant sponges that grow up to two meters high! You will also see a wide variety of fish. Always though that sharks are scary? Not the Shy Shark. This tiny shark does not grow bigger than 50 cm. Interesting is that, when the shark is afraid - for instance when you want to touch or hold it - it rolls itself into a donut.

In Smitswinkel Bay, a beautiful bay on the Cape Peninsula, you will find wrecks of navy ships that were 'put to sleep' around 1975. It is a complete surrealistic experience to swim through, along and above the ships.
The oldest shipwreck on the Cape coast is Huis te Kraaiestein, a VOC ship that sank in 1698 in Camps Bay. The remains, including VOC canons, lie in the kelp forests.
Have you always wanted to dive for the Titanic? The Maori, a British steamship, is a good alternative. The Maori, which measured 175 meters, sank close to Hout Bay in 1909. Its load: hundreds of champagne bottles, Persian rugs, priceless china and more.

The brightly coloured Red Roman is very interesting as well. This species of fish lives in big shoals with one dominant female. The rest of the gang is male. When the female dies, one of the males undergoes a gender change and becomes the leader of the pack.

To be very short: No. Don't let the media scare you with stories about people who were attacked by Great White Sharks. Never has there been a diver attacked or killed by a Great White, simply because they are not interested and do not see food in scuba divers.
Besides, sharks are kept at distance because the bubbles. They do not like the noise and will therefore stay away.
